I contacted Zii. I asked them, 'do you have to pay for you calls and texts on the Zii EGG?' And they said 'the Zii EGG is not really a phone.' But in the pictures it has calling and texting. Does it? Do you have to pay for it?

Google co-founder Sergey Brin said the team behind Buzz, Google's service that aims to organize your online social life, started out small. But as they tested the system within Google, they "found it so useful for internal communications that we became really motivated to bring this to the world," he said in an interview recorded immediately following Google's announcement Tuesday. (Scroll down to listen to the interview.)
For him, one of the most useful features is the ability "to start typing a thought right off the bat without having to worry about disrupting other people...I can throw something out there and the people who are most interested and most relevant tend to pay attention and reply."
Signal to noise
Brin said that Google's "recommendation systems will tend to surface (posts) to the most relevant people so that I'm no longer acting as a human router of sorts but the back end does that heavy lifting." He added, "Extracting signal from noise is one of our key competencies."
Safety and privacy
In response to a question, he said that the company is concerned about privacy and security because their mobile service "gives you the ability to share where you are." But, he said, it's up to individuals to decide whether to share your location and your posts," adding "people need to be thoughtful with whom they share and with what purpose."
On the other hand, Brin said that "it can really enhance safety and security," suggesting that parents could give a phone to one of their kids "and if something happens to them you can know where they are at the time." In response to a question on whether Google will provide advice on how to use this service safely, he responded, "so far it's clear that the benefits outweigh the cost and as we see people use it more broadly I'm sure we can come up with a set of guidelines."
Disclosure: Google is one of several companies that provide support for ConnectSafely.org, a nonprofit Internet safety organization I help operate.

Hi Tom and Molly, glad you are both together again.
If you like google translate you should check “translation party” a
site that will translate and English phase to Japanese and back over
and over again.
For example see what “hey mollly, let’s go grab some dinner” would
become over an iterated universal google translation: http://translationparty.com/#6422059
That would be fun!

Hi there BeMoTo,
I’ve been meaning to write in about this for a few days now, but I kept assuming someone else would bring it up first! I’m a day behind, so maybe this was brought up on Monday’s show after all.
Anyway. This is the real background of the Amazon ebook pricing thing from what I’ve been told by friends in the publishing industry. Basically, it’s all Wal-Mart’s fault. Wal-Mart is the country’s largest bookseller (believe it or not), and their policy is to match their competitors’ lowest price point. This means that when Amazon prices a Kindle book at $9.99, Wal-Mart’s policy is to sell the hardback at $9.99 (if the two are released at the same time, which is also why authors fight to delay ebook release dates).
Since Wal-Mart doesn’t want to take a loss like that, they will frequently decide simply not to carry a book rather than sell it for under $10. Wal-Mart, for good or evil, is the biggest bookseller in the country. Not having their book at Wal-Mart hurts publishers (and authors) much more than taking lower profit margins on Kindle books. (Which they do under the agency model.)
So if a publisher can get their Kindle pricing up to a level where Wal-Mart will sell the paper copies at that price, they make more money overall even if they’re making less from Amazon.
Love the show,
-Jess in Brooklyn
PS, can I just say how awesome it is to have Molly back on BOL full time? I love the rotating hosts too, but there’s really nothing better than a good old-fashioned Tom & Molly show.

Today's episode of CNET's The 404 Podcast features a pink Ouija Board, the newest Facebook meme, search engine profiling, and Google's latest mapping feature that waves good-bye to your shopping privacy.
(Credit:
Derrick Chen/The 404)
The infamous Ouija Board is still just as popular as it was when Hasbro first unleashed it in 1967. In fact, it even got extra publicity with a flaming cameo in last year's horror flick Paranormal Activity, but angry Christians aren't happy about Hasbro's latest idea for a Pink Ouija Board. Who knew that a pink square of cardboard and a magnifying glass could get so much controversy?
Please let this actually happen.

First there was Doppelganger Week, then Urban Dictionary Week, and now we finally have a Facebook meme that The 404 Podcast can get behind: Can this pickle get more fans than Nickleback? In less than a week since its genesis, the Facebook group already has more than 100,000 members, but it still needs your help to get beat out Nickelback's 1,392,481 (and growing) fans.
This next story might make you think twice before ducking into the back room at your local video store. Google's latest "Store View" is as yet unconfirmed (but not outright denied), but the service will ideally let users check out the inside of any participating retailer through Google Maps. Imagine browsing the Web for a supermarket and then virtually inspecting the interior for the best way to route yourself through a grocery store and you can see why we don't quite understand the point of Store View.
Those stories and more on today's 404, plus a meaty Calls From the Public and more of your sticker picture submissions! Keep sending them to the404(at)cnet[dot]com and we might just feature it on the show! Much thanks to Derrick for sending us a pic of the cubicle dressing you see up top.

Think your BlackBerry is immune from the security threats you've been hearing about on other smartphones? A Veracode researcher has demonstrated spyware that allows someone to steal a stranger's contact list, read text messages in real time, and track the location of the phone. The smartphone's vulnerability can be turned off, but researcher Tyler Shields says the problem is that, on the BlackBerry, "The security models are inadequate because they trust by default."

Just to throw out one more idea for memorable passwords. This method was suggested by our corporate security team. Rather than use a dictionary word and then l33t sp33k it, use a memorable phrase and use the first characters then alter it. It is also good practice to mix cases and at least 1 number and punctuation character.
So the phrase “BOL Cnet’s Podcast of Indeterminate Length” becomes the password b0lCp!l (zero replaces o and ! replaces i). It is easy to remember and reproduce and not subject to a dictionary attack. Using this as a base it could be customized for different accounts.

Wilson might be the only host on The 404 who watched the entire big game Sunday, so we don't spend too much time talking about the actual game and instead stick to the commercials. Ads this year included Google's first Super Bowl ad. Also, HomeAway revitalized the Griswold family from National Lampoon's "Vacation", and Motorola aired a commercial with Megan Fox selling something...we just don't remember what it is.
We also have a story about Comcast changing its name to Xfinity. Starting next week, its cable television, telephone, and Internet services will feature the rebranded name in 11 markets. In what seems like an effort to give a sharper edge to the brand name, the change is taking heavy fire from sites like The Consumerist, which claim that the new Xfinity name has an X-rated/pornographic/stupid/energy drink connotation.
Finally, we run down a list of the 10 most needlessly perverted mainstream games. Follow along as we chat about some of the most revealing games in console history with titles like Dead or Alive, The Sims, and Bayonetta leading the scandal. Oh my. Speaking of which, we hate to be the ones to report it, but Microsoft is no longer offering online support for original Xbox games like Halo 2 and Counterstrike. Bummer!

Hey Buzz Crew,
I was listening to episode 1158 and the discussion about secure passwords. The impression I got was that secure and memorable passwords have to be mutually exclusive. Not true, the trick is to use things that you have already memorized. So work with me on this, so let’s say that you like “cherry” as a password, terrible right, well let’s add the last 3 digits of our SSN to the end “cherry659″ ok still not the best but then let’s do some substitution and we sill come up with something great “cH3rr4659″ so now that is a lot more secure, ok, but we don’t want to use the same password at every site, well simple solution for that, give your password a prefix or postfix that is related to the site, again with this you will want to make it non obvious, like “W1tcH3rr4659″ for twitter “t3NccH3rr4659″ for cnet and so on, so then you have broken down your password into parts, some of which you have already memorized which would be hard for someone else to guess or hack. Hope this helps everyone have more secure passwords love the show

If you've ever petitioned Facebook to add a "Dislike" button to the site, you might get a kick out of a new antisocial networking site that lets your friends anonymously rag on you from the privacy of their homes. Failin.gs is currently in beta, but soon you'll be able to hit your friends up for anonymous comments about your mundane status updates. No, it doesn't integrate with Facebook itself (thankfully), but hopefully it'll force you to think twice about telling everyone what you had for dinner last night.
After 30 years of the same boring design, Heinz finally wised up and redesigned its ketchup packets. Fans of fast food will be treated to a new packet that opens up on BOTH ends: the top features the same tear-off perforation, but the new bottom opens to reveal a section for dunking your fries, which happens to be one of the most popular applications for the condiment! Check out this video on CBSNews.com for more details and look for the new packets coming to fast food joints near you!

Hey ladies! With our new daughter Lucy having joined us in the world, my wife and I have taken the past week getting used to our new set of chores and challenges. One of those is, of course, the impressive amount of poops and feeds that Lucy needs. In the beginning, we had a hard time getting Lucy to eat the appropriate amount of times in a 24 hour period, and the doc recommended we log our feedings and diaper changes.
Enter Baby ESP, a LIFESAVING Android App. ($2.99 and totally worth it)
http://babyesp.com/features.html
We use it to track our feedings and diaper changes. It also allows us to take a look back in history and see things like the number of feedings per day, how many pees, how many poops. You can also create your own tasks and track those (for example, mom's medicine.)
It has a summary window that shows all of the timers for each task in one view, allowing you to glance and say "ahhh, she's due for a feed in an hour, and we should probably check her diaper then too."
So much easier than keeping track of a pad and pencil to write it all down. And that type of simplicity is exactly what you need when you've woken up every 1.5 hrs throughout the night. Having it this easy means it still gets done, even in that haze.
Back to the baby. Miss yall, and "Love the show!"
Jason

Hey fellas,
Long time listener, first time emailer. After losing a lot of stuff
in Katrina, my wife and I learned the only thing worth saving was
photos. Keepsake souvenirs from trips can be replaced, or aren’t
really that important to begin with. The family china and silver can
be washed. Photographs, on the other hand, are irreplaceable, and if
they get wet are completely unrecoverable. While we were on
evacucation, we bought a scanner and scanned all the printed photos we
had brought with us or could save.
Now, whenever I download photos to my computer from my camera, I also
upload them via S3Fox to Amazon’s S3 remote storage service. It’s
about .15 per Gb/Month and well worth the piece of mind. A backup
drive is only good if it’s not been flooded, burned, crushed, lost, or
stolen. If Amazon’s storage server farm AND my backup drive are
toast, I’ve got bigger problems than missing photographs. In
Louisiana, we at least get a warning for our disasters. In earthquake
country, remote storage makes even more sense.
LTS,
Duff

First, may I say how much I appreciate all your knowledge. On a podcast, you recommended FoxIt for PDFs. If you install this, do you delete Adobe Reader? If you uninstall, do you mind telling me what I can safely delete? Again, love listening and watching you. Sarah
Answer: Don’t delete Adobe Reader, just uninstall it. You should see an uninstall option in for Adobe Reader specifically in your start menu. However, if you don’t, do this.
Control Panel>Add-Remove Programs>Adobe Reader
Don’t just delete files in Windows. It’s a bad idea.

Hi Guys!
I know that I need to do a clean install of Windows 7 on my Dell XPS 600 that is currently running Windows XP 32bit . On the 10/15/2009 episode of “How To: Upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7″ Tom recommended using Windows Easy Transfer wizard to back up my files and settings.
My question is, I want to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit so I can upgrade my RAM from the current 2G, but will the file that Windows Easy Transfer wizard creates from my XP 32 bit file be able to import to the Windows 7 64 bit?
Steve D
Answer: Good point! For an inexplicable reason, Microsoft’s Easy Transfer Wizard doesn’t support moving from 32-bit to 64-bit or 64-bit to 32-bit.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/32-bit-and-64-bit-Windows-frequently-asked-questions
I have READ that you can use the backup and restore function in Windows Vista, but that doesn’t help you anyway. In this case, I might try PC Mover from LapLink. http://www.laplink.com/pcmover/ Or just export the registry and move all your files manually.

Hi Guys,
Love listening to the Real Deal!
Have enjoyed Buzz Out Load for years, but the Real Deal always leaves me with something to try out when I get to work.
I have written down a half dozen questions in the past – then they get answered on the show before I send!
I wanted to ask about what software you would recommend for video editing on PC?
I am fairly computer savvy and able to learn software operation.
Craig Parker,
Toronto, Canada
Answer: I asked around with the CNET TV editors, and we all pretty much agreed Adobe Premiere ($800) is the best for Windows still. You can save a load of bucks if you don’t need a lot of pro features and go with Adobe Premiere Elements ($80). http://download.cnet.com/Adobe-Premiere-Elements/3000-2193_4-10701416.html
Rafe: I used Windows Movie Maker, http://download.live.com/moviemaker. Very simple. And free!

Greetings Rafe and Tom,
On a recent episode, someone wanted to hookup their Sling Box wireless.
I had this problem with other devices that only support wired Ethernet.
The solution I used is a D-Link DWL-G820 Wireless Gaming Adapter.
Thank you for a very informative show,

To the engineer looking to do pen input on iPad; they make
capacitive pens, and actually they make an app that turns the new
giant MacBook touchpad into a “wacom” tablet. (I know that was a
horribly malformed sentence, sorry)
Also, what are your thoughts on multi-tasking on ipad or iPhone? I
personally think it’s worthless(other than running music apps). As
long as either device doesn’t have a windowing system, what’s the
point of multitasking? It’s not like you are going to start a final
cut render and switch to play some peggle to waste time while it
renders on your iPhone or ipad. As long as apps save the last used
state, it’s essentially the same as “multitasking.”
Just a thought

Tom,
You posed somewhat of a question in yesterday’s BOL episode about who still
uses Netscape. If Netscape Messenger is considered part of Netscape the
Browser, then look no further than your friendly neighborhood National
Security Enterprise (formerly known as Nuclear Weapons Complex) facility.
Just a few months ago, we were still using Netscape to process classified

upgraded from IE6 and Office 2003.

We kick off today's episode of CNET's The 404 Podcast with a fun story about the Nestle Crunch Hotline number. The company's latest viral campaign offers a series of hidden menus within the prerecorded call center that lets callers choose between English, Spanish, and Pig Latin language options. You can also choose to hear prerecorded knock-knock jokes, "funner game options," and the weirdest feature of all, which lets you listen to the sound of bubble wrap. We attempt to call the number during the show, but the line is so popular that we keep getting busy signals, so call 1-800-295-0051 if you have time to waste after listening to our show.
Jeff also brings us an amazing deal from Dell for the new Alienware M11x. It won our Best of CES 2010 award and, judging by its size, it's comparable to a gaming Netbook. You get an 11.6-inch display and a 1.3GHz Pentium SU4100 processor inside as well as a battery with 2 hours of gaming play and 6.5 hours of standby time. Best of all, the gaming rig comes in at a base price of $799. No, we're not working on the Alienware payroll, but with portable gaming systems dropping in price, the appeal of PC gaming is bigger than ever and we thought our listeners would appreciate this deal. Check it out!
Lots more stories in the rundown today, including a $7,000 talking sex robot, a T-shirt that all predators will enjoy, the new Sonic the Hedgehog 4 trailer, and more!

You probably received a few emails about this already, BUT, according to the LA Times, Apple didn’t request Stanza to remove the USB syncing due to ebook competition, but apparently due to an API violation:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2010/02/stanza-ebook-app-maker-says-apple-nixed-usb-transfer.html
Basically, there are no public APIs that allow for USB syncing. Stanza was using a private API in violation of the agreement.
And come to think of it, I was actually quite surprised to hear that Stanza had a USB syncing app in the first place — I’ve heard of apps that are forced to use the WiFi syncing route because USB syncing isn’t allowed. Whether or not Apple will change this stance remains to be seen..
Anyway, FYI.

Hi buzz crew, CreateSpace gets them halfway there!
Is it too late to make a prediction for 2010?
If not…
I predict that Amazon will start their own publishing company, Amazon Publishing Co. Ltd. (copyright and registered trademark, David Yamasaki 2010). They will recruit as yet unpublished authors or authors that are not satisfied with the current business model (no longer under contract) and create Kindle only versions which they could heavily publicize on their own site Kindle Publishing Co. Ltd. also copyright and registered trademark, David Yamasaki 2010).
They could charge whatever they want and give writers a larger percentage of the sale price because there’s no middle man.
PS I would also like Amazon to have an orbiting space distribution center so that they could just launch everything I buy from orbit and it could just crash on my lawn. How do you like that, Cooley?

I'm looking at Adobe's own blog about iPad excluding Flash, the user comments are downright venomous against Adobe's product quality, CPU consumption, and closed code. Several posts even express hope that the iPad will move people to HTML5 more quickly, and nail the coffin on Flash altogether. Many of the posts are actually from Flash developers who are welcoming the opportunity to move away from Adobe altogether, and blaming them directly for poor implementation and support of their products on the apple platform as a whole. Maybe this controversy over the lack of Flash be a flash in the pan. (Pun intended...).

All the recent frenzy over the Apple iPad might be too much for the tech nerds of the world to handle. Tuesday, Josh Topolsky of Engadget reported on a disturbingly high volume of "ugly, pointless, and frankly threatening" comments on the Web site and took action by indefinitely closing all comments on the blog. We appreciate Josh's wake-up call, although vocalizing one's opinion through anonymous blog comments is just another extension of the Internet.
We definitely empathize with the site's moderators, however, who must be tearing their hair out trying to protect Engadget visitors from trolls, predators, idiots, and all the other lobos on the Web. Good luck with that, guys!
In other tech news, TechCrunch gives us a first look at Google's interpretation of a modern tablet device, as imagined by Glen Murphy, Google Chrome's designer. The video you see on the site is just a mock-up, however, so don't get your hopes up! At this point, we'll take just about any tablet that doesn't have an Apple on it.
We can't thank our buddy Props Guy Jim enough for making the awesome "The 404 Bunch" poster you see to the left. Jim is the same gentleman who came through with 3k temporary tattoos, so thanks again! Look for a full-size poster coming to a 404 studio near you.

2010 started off positively: an amazing CES visit, an uplifting State of the Union Address, and an entertaining Grammy Awards show. Yes, 'twas a great January...too bad that filthy, overgrown rat Punxsutawney Phil had to show up and ruin it with a dreary six more weeks of winter, which wouldn't be so bad except that Wilson won't have his iPad for another nine weeks.
Unfortunately, it turns out our furry little friend might be an amazing meteorologist, but his texting skills can use some work. It took Phil over two hours to send out his inaugural text message to awaiting subscribers. Phil took even longer to tweet out his prediction. Come on, Phil, are there no tween girls in Gobbler's Knob, Pa., that you can enlist to speed up your T9-ing? Maybe it's time for an upgrade.

Unfortunate news aside, we've also got plenty of exciting news to discuss, including this year's Oscar nominations! Of course, Avatar's nine nominations only make us that much more embarrassed about all of our trash-talking prior to watching the movie. But hey, we're big enough to admit our mistakes, however, infrequent.
And since that's more than I can say for some directors, we also have to take some time to run down this year's Razzie nominees. Will Transformers 2 take down G.I. Joe for worst movie of the year or Big Momma's House 2 circle back and reign supreme? Listen in to hear our predictions!
As usual, we've also got a few sticker pictures, but it's not even close to the number we've sent out so far, so SEND US PICTURES if you got them in the mail! Send all your tattoo and sticker pictures to the404(at)cnet{dot}com- we want to see them all!
Finally, today marks the premiere of CNET TV's newest show, preGAME! Hosts Jeff Bakalar and Mark Licea bring you all the latest gaming news plus in-house demos of the hottest games a week before they're released. The show starts today and runs every Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. Check out all the preGAME action on CNET TV!

On the Internet, the only thing harder to fight than frivolous copyright infringement accusations is comment trolls. Nevertheless, we're all going to give it our best shots. In other news, Woz hacks its Prius, the Internet comes up with wishful-thinking rumors to turn the iPad into the thing we all wanted it to be, and we just cannot get excited about the Nexus One on AT&T. Or the JooJoo tablet. --Molly

Hi JaMoTo (glad that I can use that abbreviation again):
I ran across this story on paidContent.org that suggests that Amazon might be the winner in their battle with Macmillan. Basically, the article suggests that because Amazon was losing money on Kindle books, they’ll now stop losing money on Macmillan books (and on books from any other publisher that adopts the agency model). In the end, the prices will naturally go down, but Amazon will no longer be taking a loss on Kindle books. If this is true, then Amazon just lured all of the publishers into a trap.
Still, I don’t buy every argument made in the article. (The author suggests that if e-book prices go up, piracy won’t increase. I disagree with that statement). I seriously think that $9.99 is the sweet spot for new e-books. At prices higher than that, customers will buy the physical copy instead. Only at under $10 does is it appealing to me, at least, to give up my right to loan or sell the book when I’m done with it.
The article presents an interesting theory, and I can’t wait to see how this all turns out.

Hey Buzz Crew
I’m a big fan of Stanza, I love the ability to share any document no matter what format onto my iPhone, which is perfect for my job. However it looks like Apple has made the devs take away features from the app. An update hit yesterday and all it does is remove the ability to share books from your pc to the iPhone app via USB. This is pretty darn suspicious as Apple just announcement their own iBook platform for the iPad. On the Stanza forums the devs explained that if they don’t remove the feature they risk being booted from the App Store !
Love the show.

There is a problem to polarized contact lenses (ep. 1155) beyond the cold of Maine. Polarized lenses must be oriented in order to be effective as sunglasses (decreasing sun glare off the ground or other horizontal surfaces), and one lens must be oriented 90° different than that for use in 3-D viewing. Yet contact lenses tend to slip around, losing their orientation.
Possible solution: Magnets? But you’d have to have some electromagnetic field on your eyes, generated by something nearby. Temple implants? I’m not sure it’s sellable.
Keep up the good work!

The Grammy Awards are becoming less and less significant to our personal music tastes, but something has to be said about a show that nominates NICKELBACK for Best Hard Rock Performance.
To make matters worse, the show paired together some of the worst collaborations in the history of live performance.
To quickly recap the night, all you need to know is that Lady Gaga won two well-deserved awards and performed Speechless with Sir Elton John, Green Day took the award for Best Rock Album, poor Stevie Nicks looked pissed to be singing about locker room romance with 16-year-old darling Taylor Swift, and the live studio audience got treated to a 3D clip from Michael Jackson's "This Is It" while the rest of us settled for 2Ds and a subsequent headache.

Speaking of bad news, we've got some bad news about the Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, the new Broadway musical coming soon to New York. We just found out that the entire musical soundtrack is composed by U2's Bono and The Edge. Don't get us wrong, the three of us all have a special place in our hearts for U2, but their music just doesn't evoke images of a masked web-crawler slinging his way about town snapping photos of criminals and taking down a few in the process.
Finally, much thanks to everyone for sending in their sticker pictures! We've sent out hundreds of envelopes so far, so keep them coming; send a photo of where you put the stickers and tattoos to the404(at)cnet(dot)com!

The iPad. Perhaps you've heard of it. Now there are hundreds, maybe thousands of posts and podcasts up about this product, and whether it's worth buying, and what's with the stupid name. But for this podcast I have two smart guests with me with whom I want to step a bit beyond these immediate concerns and talk about what the iPad means to Apple as a company, and the tech industry at large.
First, Peter Burrows, senior writer for BusinessWeek. He's covered Apple since 1995, starting with a cover story on the company's near-demise called "Fall of an American Icon" to a story earlier this month entitled "Google vs. Apple: Why They Can't Be Friends?" He also wrote "Backfire: Carly Fiorina's High-Stakes Battle for the Soul of Hewlett-Packard" in 2003. Peter, thanks for joining us. (See Peter's blog, Byte of the Apple)
Also in the studio with us, Donald Bell, CNET senior editor for MP3 and Digital Audio, author of MP3 Insider, and podcaster on our show of the same name.

Reporters' Roundtable #18: What the iPad means to Apple
Show notes and talking points
You were both at the Stevenote on January 27. What was the mood of the crowd? How did Jobs appear?
To the issue at hand: There's lots of commentary out there on the device itself. But is it really good for consumers, and if so, which ones?
How important will Apple's advertising chops be to this product's success? How will they sell it? As "magic?"
Let's look at this from another perspective: Why does Apple need the iPad?
Peter, your belief is that iTunes is the keystone of this product's strategy, I believe. Tell us more.
This is a gated app-store device. Is this the beginning of a sea change in how software is sold?
Let's talk about partners:
Google, Microsoft, McGraw-Hill, Verizon
Why so much attention to iWork, you think?
Is it a Netbook killer?
What about its effect on the Kindle? There will be a Kindle app, right? Is that good or bad for Amazon?
Many people were hoping the iPad would be part of a plan by Apple to "save" the media business, but there was no talk of that at the launch. Were those hopes unjustified, or could the iPad still be a vehicle for new business models for newspapers and other print media?
Is it Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive's ultimate vision? What could they possibly do next?
Next week: Google-China with Elinor Mills, Tom Krazit, Declan McCullagh. 1 p.m. PST Friday, February 5, right here. Watch my Twitter feed for updates. Send feedback to roundtable@cnet.com.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I just finished listening to your coverage on the Apple iPad and found myself thinking Apple is taking its fan base and popularity for granted by not innovating, even when technology is readily available. My brother is a CMOS image sensor designer, and was the senior engineer on the project that created the first credit card sized digital camera. The sensor had also been employed for rear facing cameras in many newer automobiles an is a proven viable technology. About two years ago he had a meeting with some VP at Apple regarding including a forward facing camera on the iPhone. The idea was to have a low powered, lower resolution video feed to use for streaming video calls at lower bandwidths. My brother didn’t partner with Apple on the project, opting to go with imaging DNA sequences instead, but it confuses me that Apple hasn’t found and implemented this solution yet. Maybe they need to readjust their spending away from bashing Windows constantly and start innovating again.

Hello Buzzers…
I think the most interesting thing about the iPad and iBooks
announcement is the fact that they will be using the ePub format. If
publishers start making textbooks in ePub format, then the accessibility
issue may be wiped away by the recent announcement at the ATIA
conference. At ATIA the makers of the Victor Reader Stream announced
compatibility with ePub books so if blind users can use iTunes to buy
books and import to the Stream then issue resolved. The Victor Reader is
an iPod like device for reading books and playing other audio formats.
These developments could be a huge move in the right direction, until
publishers figure out a way to screw it up with permissions or such.
Love the show!

The 404 Podcast 508: Where we re…
1/29/2010
This week's Apple iPad announcement gives us the perfect opportunity to discuss the future of publishing with Cliff Chiang and Jerry Ma, two graphic illustrators in the comic book industry. They join us in the studio today to talk about their collaborative project, "Secret Identities," a graphic novel anthology of Asian American superhero stories.
Cliff Chiang and Jerry Ma of Secret Identities
(Credit:
CNET/The 404)
Growing up as an Asian Americans in the world of comics isn't easy, especially when the only culturally identifiable characters you see are either stereostyped villains or hyper-sexualized women. As comic books quickly gain popularity here (although they are still not nearly as prevalent as in Japan), we're starting to see a shift in the cultural perception of comic books, away from the chiseled, American superhero archetype. The artists behind "Secret Identities" navigate this sea change with stories equally rooted in Asian American history and individual experience.
(Credit:
Secret Identities)
Throughout today's episode of The 404, Jerry and Cliff offer a unique perspective on the current state of the publishing industry and the move toward digital comic creation. As it turns out, neither of the guys are fans of the new iPad, but Jerry raises an interesting point about the practical application of the iPad in the hands of a parent. And although we didn't have a chance to talk to them about it on the show, both are still considering the Modbook, an aftermarket Apple MacBook modified to work as a tablet computer.
We also love when guests bring us gifts, so look out for another contest for a chance to win a copy of "Secret Identities" (also available for purchase on BlackLava) that features custom sketches from Jerry and Cliff!

You have to admit that the second the word "iPad" came out of Steve Jobs' mouth, you envisioned a future where the Gadgettes devoted an entire episode to the mocking of such a product name... right? Buckle up, space cadet. It's time to take a crazy ride into the world of double entendre.

Hey gals (and Jason),
In last week’s web exclusive you talked about Baby Einstein and how trippy it is. Well, before that you talked about the Boobahs……um, have you by chance seen their website? If you think Baby Einstein is out there, check out the “Boobah Zone”. I call it visual heroine for children. My wife and I are having our first child this summer, and I can guarantee you my peanut will not be watching it. Hey Guys,
I have recently wanted to start using linux. I have done some looked around and found that there are several different distros, what are the major differences between them? Is there any particular distro that you would recommend to someone as their first distro?
Love the show
Gabriel
Answer: Hands down for beginners I recommend Ubuntu. Wikipedia has a nice list of distros with a designation of main purpose: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Linux_distributions If you really want to dig into reading up on the differences try http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

Hi Tom/Rafe,
In the CES 2010 episode Tom made a comment that he used his Mifi instead of sharing the wireless on his Mac. I’ve been looking for a way of sharing my Wifi on an XP machine; the only way I’ve found is get the internet via wire and use the wireless for the sharing (and a wired connection isn’t always available). On a Mac, can you connect via wireless and share the connection at the same time? How about on Windows 7?
Thanks!
Chris the Accountant, Canada
Answer: You want Internet Connection Sharing: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Using-ICS-Internet-Connection-Sharing. Then you have to set up an ad-hoc WiFi link.
Go to Control Panel, select Network and Sharing Center.
Click on the link “Set up a Connection or Network”.
Select the option "Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network".
Caveat: I haven’t actually done this. I’d rather pay $720 a year for a MiFi than bang my head against Windows’ network configuration settings.
****************
Tom,
You seem to love your Thinkpad’s so maybe you can help me here. I have a t61 that used to have XP and bluetooth. Now I have Windows 7 and no bluetooth. I have tried everything.
There is nothing on Lenovo’s site except for a Lazar mouse bluetooth driver. The device manager doesn’t show the hardware at all. not even as a device that is missing drivers. It is like It never existed to start with. I have installed all the hotkeys and Fnf5 only shows WiFi. You seem to work with Thinkpads so I am hoping you know about this glitch and a way to fix it.
Love the shows,
Ian
Answer: I haven’t run across this myself, but it looks like others have:

R&T,
I see some GPS units have bluetooth.
Is it possible to use a bluetooth keyboard to enter destination information on any make/model GPS units — instead of the on-screen entry?
I would expect this would have a better chance than a USB keyboard with a mini-adapter since the bluetooth keyboard would have its own power supply.
LTS
Michael, lost in Akron
Answer: Hello Michael,
Your question was passed around our Reviews staff and finally ended up on my desk. I hope you don’t mind my chiming in!
I’ve seen devices support hands-free calling (and a few support A2DP audio streaming and serial connections for contacts syncing), but none of the Bluetooth-capable GPS devices that I’ve tested have been compatible with Bluetooth keyboards or other input peripherals.
If you absolutely can’t deal with tapping on a touch screen, then you can always try using your GPS device’s software to input points of interest (such as TomTom’s HOME or Garmin’s Connect) using your full-size keyboard; sending destinations to your device through Google Maps (works best with a GPS smartphone or a Web-connected navigation device); or finding a device that uses voice recognition.
I hope that helps,
Antuan

Tom,
Just wanted to comment on Wednesday’s caller about me. The account wasn’t “stolen” by any definition but in an attempt to protect the person responsible for the account I used, I purposefully kept that information light. And, as you suggested, I did indicate several times in the piece that I was not under an NDA and that I was operating with OnLive’s consent.
Just don’t want you guys to think I was acting inappropriately regarding the issue or anything like that but the other criticisms are indeed fair.
Have a good one!

Hi everyone,
I heard there was going to be a protest outside the Apple event yesterday by the Defective by Design people (I read about it here http://www.defectivebydesign.org/) over the locked down nature of the device. Did anyone at the event run into this to your knowledge? What are your thoughts on the implications of Apple bringing this locked down infrastructure of the iPhone/iPod Touch into the typically open world of home computing? It probably wasn’t a huge group though I do agree with them on a number of points.
Love the show,

This episode of The 404 Podcast is dedicated to all of our heartbroken comrades out there who were expecting an Apple tablet computer, but got an Apple e-reader instead. Join us as we recap what might be the most underwhelming Apple product announcement since Apple TV.
Full disclosure here: This entire 30-minute episode is dedicated to the Apple iPad. We know a lot of you must be exhausted with all the moaning and groaning so far, but we'll take any opportunity to make fun of Wilson. Bear with us as we try to get him to say one bad thing about the iPad.
In addition to a healthy dose of polite yelling, we also play a collection of voice mails that drive the stake in even further. We guarantee tomorrow's show to be (relatively) free of Apple talk, and we're also very excited to welcome Jerry Ma and Cliff Chiang of the Asian-American comic anthology "Secret Identities," who will join us in the studio tomorrow to talk about state of the industry, ethnic minorities in the comic genre, and...well let's face it, we want their artistic opinion of the iPad.

Dialed In Podcast 112: iPad, schmiP…
1/27/2010
Apparently, there was something called the Apple iPad announced today. We're not really sure what all the hubbub is about, but we share a few thoughts on the device and take a couple of jabs at its unfortunate name. Also, though there was no mention of iPhone 4.0, there was plenty of other cell phone and smartphone news. The FCC goes after Google and the carriers about their ETFs; Motorola teases a new handset that will be revealed during the Super Bowl; and Microsoft begins its push for Windows Mobile 7. All this and more on this week's information-packed episode of Dialed In.

Hey Buzz Crew,
Just listened to episode 1511 where Miles from Texas describes the Pixel Qi (pronounced “chee”) display.
Many people don’t realize that Pixel Qi’s technology is already used in over a million devices: the XO Laptop from Nicholas Negroponte’s One Laptop per Child. I got an XO in 2007 from the first Give 1 Get 1 program, and while the display isn’t perfect — the colors aren’t as rich as an LCD, and the black-and-white mode isn’t as reflective as e-ink — it’s certainly impressive. I’m sure this proven technology has advanced quite a bit over the years, and am excited to see commercial success branching from the innovative OLPC project.
Love the show!
Adam from Chicago
PS: the XO is also widely regarded as spurring the netbook trend in low-cost, internet-connected laptops.

CNET's The 404 Podcast is also on the job, so check out today's episode for our predictions on what Steve Jobs has in store for the world. It better be good, especially if Jobs stayed awake all night inventing it. Jeff and I are able to approach it with a level head, but Wilson G. Tang is in full-blown Apple fanboy mode with the T-shirt and the Apple lip gloss all ready to go.
Before we get into our predictions, Jeff shows us a surprising study that demonstrates pirates are the music industry's most valuable customers. We're a little suspicious that the story comes from TorrentFreak.com, but they bring up a legitimate point that music "sharers" (aka pirates) are actually likely to buy more digital music as opposed to physical media in a store. In either case, the best way to support your favorite bands, signed or unsigned, is to buy a ticket to their live show and spend money on merchandise while you're there. That way, your cash support goes directly into the pockets of the band, instead of the digital music service taking a cut of the profit. Stick local!

Next up we've got a story about the worst Facebook revenge, like, ever. It happens like this: teenage girl finds six-pack of beer in younger brother's closet. Brother searches through sister's closet and finds disturbingly detailed "hookup list" and publishes image of said list on Facebook.
Wait, it gets way worse: the ultimate fatality is that he also tags every single guy on the list and starts an epic three-way flame war between brother, sister, and a group of guys that all have one thing in common.
We end today's show by going around the table and seriously (OK, not seriously at all) dishing out our Apple tablet predictions for the day.
Spoiler alert: Jeff is hopeful for a game-centric device, Justin hopes you can connect a printer to it, and Wilson can't even talk with all the saliva pouring out of his mouth.

This week, we discuss Apple's reported decline in iPod sales--not to be confused with the company's overall sales, which continue to be through the roof. Also, some code in the Zune Software update has people speculating about a potential Zune phone, and a new music format might be on the horizon (which we think will have just about as much traction as Sony's proprietary ATRAC codec). Finally, we confront stylish headphones' lack of good sound, and let some listeners of questionable sobriety take over the airwaves.

Hi Buzz Crew,
I have been trying to figure out why I need a tablet when I have an iPhone and a MacBook Pro. John Gruber posted an interesting theory about how the tablet will take over for a laptop. That was a nice idea but I still couldn’t see myself giving up my laptop for a tablet. Then I ran across this article from Slate:

I realized the problem was me. The Jesus Tablet is not a product aimed at techies, it’s a computer for people who find using computers frustrating. The more I think about it the more it makes sense to me. The sub $1000 price point, the iPhone OS, the rumor saying it’s a family computer, the tablet form factor – this will be the first true appliance computer.
Love the show – Rick
