Tech Critiques Episode 160This week in the news we talk about a blog post by Kevin Rose that gives his opinion on why he thinks the new AppleTV will change everything. We chime in on what we think could be coming for an updated AppleTV. September 1, is the expected announcement date for new iPods and the rumored updated AppleTV. Dish Network is beta testing the DishOnline.com streaming website. Which will stream several cable networks to existing Dish Network subscribers. They also expect to have this streaming functionality available for iPad and iPhone in September. There is a new FCC report out that says consumers receive half the broadband speeds they pay for. I can attest to this as this is the case with my DSL connection. We pay for a 6Mbs connection and can only get 2.5Mbs. Another Android trojan has been found by security company Symantec. A Android game called Tap Snake secretly transmits your GPS coordinates while you play the game. It has been reported that the PS3 is now jail breakable via a USB thumb drive. This PS3 jailbreak is said to enable the ability to copy games to the internal or a external PS3 hard drive. This PS3 jailbreak is available for pre-order now for $150. Also we give you some info on the new Paypal iPhone App v 2.5.0.101 and what the major security flaw is with this new version of their iPhone app.Digg Version 4Digg is a website for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the web. With the new version 4.0 of the website the user interface is much cleaner and easier to use. Tech Critiques Episode 159This week in the news we talk about how returning college students will be facing anti-piracy counter measures. These new counter measures are because of a new law Congress passed called the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA). Movie rental service Netflix is rumored to have paid nearly 1 Billion dollars to add more movies to it's streaming movie service. The deal would add movies from Paramount Pictures, Lions Gate and MGM Studios. Kapersky Lab's has put out a warning of SMS based Android Trojans. The security firm Kapersky has discovered the first Trojan SMS that specifically targets Android devices. If you are an App developer and your App is not selling there might be a solution for you. The new site App Exchange matches developers willing to seller their code to buyers looking for Apps to buy the rights to. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) just announced a major takedown of nine movie piracy sites that illegally offered first-run movies, some within just hours of their theatrical release. We discuss if we are going to jailbreak our iOS devices and what the pros and cons are of jailbreaking are. Rim is planning to release their own tablet device, which will be called the Blackpad. Tech Critiques Episode 157This week in the news we talk about the existence of malware in the Android Market Place. This malware disguises itself as a wallpaper app but it then sends all your personal data to a website in China. A new Android device company Augen has released a 7 inch Android tablet for sale at Kmart for only 150 dollars. This marks the beginning of the Android tablets and is probably the first one many people will see and play with in stores. Redbox is considering a online service to compete with Netflix. It is not known yet whether this will be a streaming service or a DVD by Mail web portal. That would allow Redbox customers access to a larger selection of DVD movies. Adobe is working on a new creative software that will allow magazine companies to create their content for tablet devices like the iPad. Hopefully this will make it easier for publishers to create content for these new digital devices. Google has discontinued the Nexus One Android phone. It barely even got started and Microsoft has decided to kill off the Kin line of mobile phones to concentrate on Windows Mobile 7. Tech Critiques Episode 153This week in the news we talk about E3 2010 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). And all the new gaming hardware and software that was announced this week at the show. Microsoft has released their new Xbox 360 slim console to replace the older larger version. Which was also prone to dying with the red ring of death that required you to replace your Xbox. Microsoft also revealed their new motion based controller for Xbox called Kinect. It was formerly called project Natal but is now know as Kinect. Tech Critiques Episode 151This week in the news we talk about what happened at the All Things Digital D8 conference. Where Steve Jobs and several other technology CEO's spoke and gave their views on the current state of the industry. Apple is planning to open a second Apple Store in the Columbus, Ohio area. This new Apple Store is near the Tech Critiques Lab but still not close enough for our needs. Google has decided to stop using Windows based computers. This decision comes after last years security breach of a Windows based computer at the Google corporate headquarters. GM (General Motors) has announced that they will be partnering with Google and using the Android OS for the new Chevy Volt hybrid car. Also the Android OS will be used to update the GM OnStar Telematics service so that it can better compete with Ford's Sync system.
