That's 50 weeks of the Martin Bailey Photography Podcast! I want to thank all of you that keep on listening. One of the things that I constantly hear from listeners is that you appreciate the tips and techniques that you gain from my experiences in photography via this Podcast, that are applicable to your own photography. From today for a few weeks I'm going to take a brief look at each episode to date, and give a brief mention of what was discussed and mention one or two of the main points of that Podcast. I won't be able to cover all the tips and techniques of course. To do that, you need to listen to the original Podcasts. But kind of to celebrate the achievement of reaching the 50th episode, I'm hoping this will be a way to not only condense the main gist of what I've covered so far, but also give new comers a brief outline of what is in the archives. There are going to be many more pearls hiding in the old episodes, but with so much listening time needed to catch up, it's hard to think of where to start. In recent years, digital photography has done away with the necessity for some filters, such as daylight filters and warm-up filters etc as most colour correction is now taken care of much more easily by the White Balance feature on our cameras. If you didn't listen to episode 23 yet, we basically learned that the longer the lens, the more prone to camera shake your images will be, and I mentioned a few ways we can minimize the risk of this, including the rule of thumb I use, which is using the focal length you are shooting at as the slowest advisable shutter speed. If you are not so confident with this, it might be a good idea to go back to episode 23 first. If you are OK with this I would not say it is essential to listen to these Podcasts sequentially. There are various reasons why you might consider investing in a teleconverter. They are a relatively cheap way to increase the focal length of your existing lenses. This obviously is going to save you money, as you don't need to buy the longer focal length lens. Also, it saves you carrying around the additional weight of multiple lenses. Sometimes you simply want to get even closer to your subject, even with an expensive super-telephoto lens. Whereas we use extenders or tele-converters to increase the focal length of the lens without affecting the minimum and maximum focusing distances, extensions tubes enable you to shorten the minimum focusing distance so that you can focus on subjects much closer to the lens. It is important to note that the maximum focusing distance is greatly reduced also, often to the point where the lens cannot realistically be used for anything other than very close work while the extension tube is attached. The degree to which the focusing distances are reduced depends on the lens you are using it with. Tune in to find out more about Extenders/Teleconverters and Extension Tubes.

For my monitor calibration I use chose Spyder2PRO from ColorVision. Eye-One Display 2 is another great option. Both companies have various offerings at various prices. When the sky starts to turn orange then red as the sun goes down, it can make an amazing spectacle, and your emotions will run riot and you might not think much about what you are shooting. To make your image convey the emotion you want to, try to find a dramatic setting to capture your sunset shots, and set them apart. Some sunsets are so spectacular that they will work with nothing else in the screen, but usually you'll want to be somewhere that will allow you to maximize on this amazing event. In this episode I'll introduce some of my sunset shots, including my first good one from 1993, up to a number of shots from Jan 9th 2006, and how I went about getting these shots. I explain all the major steps for you to think about including transferring files, how I organize my directories and view by date using third party software. On to rating and selecting my best shots to take further into the workflow and exporting to Photoshop or opening in PhotoShop RAW, and some of the fine tuning I do to the image. I also explain about the different versions I save off, and sharpening for Web or printing, and finally discussing my backup process, though I'm not really happy with this right now. Below are some links I mention in the episode. The Adobe Camera RAW Plug-in version 3.3 Beta does not seem to recognize Canon's new Picture Style settings. Predominantly a nature photographer, although I try, I'm not very good at making portraits. The actual photos will speak for themselves, so you can make up your own mind about that, but the actual making of the photos doesn't come very naturally to me. My main problem is that I get a little shy when pointing my camera at people instead of animals or landscapes that don't have the ability to say "No".
