The rest of the world was sucking Zotts and listening to the grey eyed blocks of Depeche Mode, grayed Aerosmith, when Mike Watt began his four stringed low-resistance revolution. The first time I heard fIREHOSE was on a noisy cassette of the mixed variety I stuck in the deck of my hoopdy while my best friend and I tried to repair the breaks. “Repair” is a strong word since we were optimistically trying to give that Civic any breaking power. The tape deck was probably the only thing that consistently worked on that POS.
“” was my introduction to punk without nihilism. No more vacuous lyrics, no more shallow sentiments pasted over two chord riffs. Mike Watt, George and Ed Crawford if you ever decide to do a reunion tour please play near me. And call it the Liberty tour.
