Waits as an artist

By JayCz2ndTry 3/9/2009 04:41:37
His experimentation is uncanny.  It is amazing to listen to the growth and confidence as an artist.  I love the experimentation especially with his use of percussion as it has changed through the years.  As has been previously mentioned he is not for everyone.  That is probably what makes me like him so much is that he is an artist and an acquired taste, just like scotch.  Have to love it.

Amazing song writer

By klaks 1/2/2009 15:27:46
Tom Waits composes some of the most memorable lyrics I have every listened to.  His vocal style is carnal and not for everyone, but I frankly can't imagine a song like Hang On St. Christopher or Filipino Box Spring Hog with any other vocal than his.

Swordfish Trombones seems to get the most critical aclaim, but I think Mule Variations is his best album, with songs like Big in Japan, Get Behind the Mule, Chocolate Jesus and Box Spring Hog.  Bone Machine, Real Gone, Alice, Blood Money, and of course, Orphans are all noteworthy CDs as well.

Are you cool enough to listen to Tom Waits?  The acid test is to listen to the 30 second clip of Filipino Box Spring Hog.(note the F, not Ph)  If you are not repulsed, a world of beautiful maladies awaits you.

Drunken bliss

By UncutSugar K 12/27/2008 13:06:07
Possibly my all time favourite artist. Raw emotion fused with blues in his early releases, which is further nurtured with experimental noise in his latest, quite simply one the best musicians of all time.

He's not a bad singer

By kwyjibo1978 10/24/2008 02:55:53
He has an amazing voice! It's not "pretty," but few vocalists can sing with so much emotion and not sound annoying.

of all time

Sure, he sings like he gargling razors but he's one of the greatest songwriters of his or any other generation. His drunken hobo voice works perfectly for his subject matter: the lowlife, the underdog and the has-been. Amazing. My favorite musician of all time. All Time.

I just got back from watching his show in Columbus OH.  Best show ever. I cannot go to another artist after this. If you get a chance to se him hop on it.
