Jack White seems to have an extraordinary depth of musical knowledge (e.g., Take a Whiff On Me - The White Stripes at Blackpool Lights - Huddy Ledbetter, Dylan, The Beatles references, etc) while at the same time possessing the musicianship to create a sound that is distinctively his own. I admit it always takes a couple of listens to his work before I fully follow it; this seems to be a common pattern among people I have talked to that appreciate what he is doing. In the repeated listenings, it is the explicit and precisely defined areas of musical and emotional cacophony and harmony that one becomes aware he is great - teetering on the edge of a new movement. I don't know if his multiple projects help or hinder his work; I suspect he is looking for his Lennon to McCartney or vice-versa. I think anyone not currently taking Jack White seriously as an artist right now is either unaware of him or lacks the vision of seeing Zarathustra coming down the mountain.
Jack White is the modern day Dylan, he can keep writing songs and none of them are bad, in fact, most all are very very memorable. This is why I believe the White Stripes are the greatest band ever.
