Very talented band with interesting lyrics and a unique sound that I would describe psychodelic punk rock, though you really can't pigeon-hole this much talent into a simple label.
While some of their music has made it into the mainstream by way of car and salad dressing commercials as well as a couple of movie soundtracks (Wedding Crashers and one of the lamer Batman flicks), they are distinctively not mainstream. All of their albums are well produced while still retaining a raw element that is fresh.
They are infamous for their concert performances, and are one of those rare bands that seems to sound better live than in the studio. I recommend that you listen to the Flaming Lips loud with headphones in a dimly lit room, imbibing the drink of your choice. Beanbag chair and lava lamps are optional.
