One of the busiest bands in Mexico,
Los Rehenes formed early in the 1980s in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico -- the same small village which produced another popular Latin act,
Los Temerarios. Though the group spends most of their time playing romantic favorites, they will often launch into rousing
corridos or stirring patriotic numbers. Consisting of vocalists
Javier and
Roberto Torres, guitarist
Jesus Ortega, bassist Jesus Lambero, percussionists
Ben and
Gerardo Torres plus keyboard player Francisco Ramon,
Rehenes recorded many albums for the small independent label, DMY Records, then became popular in the '90s with the hits "Corazones Rotos" and "Traicionera." The band signed with Discos Sabinas (FonoVisa in America), and released three successful albums in a row: En Grande, Los Rehenes, and Ni el Primero, Ni el Ultimo during 1992-94. The nominal leader of the group,
Javier Torres, began recording solo albums as well in 1994, with Javier Torres con Banda. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
