Simply put, Franz Ferdinand basically got me interested in modern music. If the Zune Social had existed in 2004, and if it had been logging every Franz Ferdinand play, I'd probably have about 8,000 or so plays of these guys.
They were such a breath of fresh air in the music industry at a time when alternative airwaves were being dominated by mediocre songs from Papa Roach and Green Day (at least, here in the US). I heard them first through listening to UK radio in the summer of 2004, and I immediately fell in love.
They didn't catch on in America until about four months later when "Take Me Out" (mainly because of the insanely good music video) became a global smash success. Then their success was multiplied by the Rich-Costly re-record of "This Fffire", which also made a considerable splash on the US modern rock charts.
Franz arrived on the scene around the same time as other new-wave bands like The Futureheads, The Killers, The Bravery, The Rakes, Kaiser Chiefs, etc. But yeah... I really have these guys to thank for the post-punk / indie music I enjoy so much today... I can't wait for the new album!
