biography

Neo-soul singer/songwriter/producer Dwele grew up on Detroit's west side, listening to soul music from Motown visionaries Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as well as jazz on the radio. Born Andwele Gardner, he began writing songs at the age of ten, after his father was murdered outside his home, and attended Cody High in Detroit. Dwele spent a year studying music at Wayne State but then opted for an informal education, making music at his home while living in Dearborn and working for AAA. His demo tape, 1998's The Rize, made waves around the Motor City, and he spent time collaborating with Detroit hip-hop group Slum Village and Philadelphia rapper Bahamadia. Signed to Virgin on the strength of his songwriting and performance skills, Dwele released Subject in mid-2003 and cemented his appeal with European audiences (he was a favorite on Gilles Peterson's influential Radio 1 program) with a tour that summer. His second album, Some Kinda..., followed in 2005 and reached the Top 10 of the R&B chart. A couple years later, he provided the hook on Kanye West's hit single "Flashing Lights." Released in 2008, Sketches of a Man (number seven R&B) and 2010's W.W.W. (featuring sociopolitical themes, a slight change of pace) found him on the Koch label. ~ John Bush, Rovi

I became a Dwele fan by accident. Didn't care for him at first but later picking him up. I love this dude. Sketches Of A Man is one of the best R&B/Neo Soul albums ever! Period! dwele is an amazing artist.

  • Real Music for your Neo-Soul

    By budhaluvr6/23/2009 02:31:51

man, what is there to say about dwele.  been hooked on this for years now since before subject and with every new album just keeps me feenin' for more.  can't go a week without putting some dwele on rotation.  lovin' sketches, you just feel all his emotions and feeling in each and every one of his songs.  gotta also agree with my man Sinful, if you haven't checked out his show yet, get there.  well worth it.  dwele has shown in all his works the skillful blending of hiphop, soul, and jazz in a sound that truly is dwele unique and ahead of it's time.  keeps my hopes up that good real music is still out there.  hopefully more people wake up to this and stop sleeping on this.  man is for real too (can't believe he actually responded by email to my girl b**hing to him on his myspace for not announcing his last LA show and apologizing, haha).  can't wait for his show this summer in LA (he has it announced this time, haha).

  • Excellent Neo Soul

    By Sinful Suite2/20/2009 19:30:43

I've known about Dwele for awhile.  His music is top notch from the writing to the production.  For all of you that have the opportunity go see him live in concert.  He gives you your money's worth.  He deviated from his set play list and took request for about 45 - 60 minutes in New Orleans.  Then went back to the list afterwards.  I can't wait for him to come back to New Orleans which I hope is soon.  Dwele, Musiq, and Jill need to do a tour together.
