biography

Emo-leaning and volatile post-hardcore outfit Dance Gavin Dance, somewhat similar to peers Chiodos and the Fall of Troy, feature former members of Farewell Unknown and Ghost Runner on Third, two alums of Seattle's Less Avenged Records. The Sacramento crew is comprised of vocalists Jonny Craig (singing) and Jonathan Mess (screaming), guitarists Will Swan and Sean O'Sullivan, bassist Eric Lodge, and drummer Matt Mingus. The sextet hooked up with Rise Records in late summer 2006 and debuted that November with the EP Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

      • Victoria's Secret Band

      • Look up Victoria's Secret Band on Youtube.  It has Mess, Lodge, Craig,
Swan, Mingus, and Garren, (So basically it's old Dance Gavin Dance) just a jam session though, although Garren did say
they might record some stuff a while down the road.

      • seriously.

      • were better with Jonny. BUT, i think that since they are taking a new turn from how they used to be, they sound emaculate.  the self-titled album was just an epic fail in my opinion.  it seemed like they were trying too hard to be like how they used to.  with different members comes a different sound, and happiness proved that.  i'm a big fan of them (seeing as i got a tattoo of the Brontosaurus, it's on their Myspace), and i'm looking forward to seeing what they have to bring to the table.

      • They should have been bigger..

      • These guys are talented and original in every piece they do...I've never heard anything like it :D
They're great. They mix a hint of hardcore drums with wailing guitars, the powerful bass, and screaming in the background, with R&B vocals in the lead...it reminds me a little of beauty and the beast. Great Band, Awesome tunes...If you like Fall of Troy and Ghost Runner and Third.
Buy both of their albums but purchase Downtown Battle Mountain first :) it's hella catchy...
        BUT and A BIG ONE...
The fire that made this sextet the uber elite band that they were is gone! The departure of Jon Mess, Johnny Craig, Eric Lodge and Sean O'Sullivan leaves me wondering if i'll enjoy their new stuff the same. The truth is its not the same...their new stuff is okay but not the same! It is not in the same name of the original Dance Gavin Dance material we, (old fans), are accustomed to. Mingus changed his drumming but it's still pretty amazing, The guitar riffs are also in catchy in abundance this time...Kurt Travis is good and with the introduction of Will as screamer makes this band sound like a funky alternative to the bands out on the scene today. I still feel that after their release of the self-titled, "Death Star" album, they should just do justice to the band by changing the band name to something else.

      • Love it.

      • I LOVE dgd, definitely one of my all-time favourite bands.
They're one of the catchiest sounds I've ever heard, and I liked the self title album just as much as their old stuff. Both have an amazingly unique sound that gets better every time you listen to it.
The most recent album, Happiness, was a bit disappointing, and could have had more work put into it.
Not too bad live, I just wish that they would play more from Dance Gavin Dance and less from Happiness.
If people want Johnny Craig, go listen to Emarosa, considering John Mess is now touring with them. They'll sound exactly like the old DGD.
