biography

Mike Patton may be the best-known Faith No More singer, but Chuck Mosely was the frontman for the group's first two albums. Born in Hollywood, CA, but raised in South Central Los Angeles and Venice, Mosely took piano lessons as a child, which didn't amount to much. Interested in the burgeoning local punk scene as a teenager, Mosely befriended bassist Billy Gould and the pair became brief members of an obscure local band called the Animated. Upon the group's breakup, Gould formed another outfit, Faith No More, while Mosely fronted Haircuts That Kill. When Faith No More was left singer-less in 1984 (a pre-Hole Courtney Love had just split), a tryout was arranged for Mosely. Despite his knack for wandering off key, Mosely's charisma got him the job, as the group (which would eventually include keyboardist Roddy Bottum, guitarist Jim Martin, and drummer Mike Bordin) played regularly around the San Francisco area.

After a pair of albums created a buzz in the alternative rock underground (1985's We Care a Lot and 1987's Introduce Yourself), Mosely found himself at odds with his bandmates due to unpredictable behavior both on and off the stage, which led to his ousting from the band in 1988. Faith No More would continue on with a new singer (Mike Patton) and score a hit straight away with their next release, The Real Thing, while Mosely attempted to work his way back into music. Early in the '90s, Mosely joined up with Washington, D.C., hardcore icons the Bad Brains, but before anything could be recorded by the Mosely led lineup, the singer bailed (complaining that the group wanted him to sound too much like their previous singer, H.R.). Mosely then formed another group, Cement, a quartet that issued a pair of albums, 1993's self-titled release and 1994's Man With the Action Hair, before splitting as well. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

      • The Best Worst Singer Ever

      • The title say's it all.   He's so bad he even wrote a song about how bad he's received by music critics.  To me, the best FNM was the Chuck Mosley era.  Without him the landscape of crap labeled  "rap-metal" wouldn't be received the same as it is today.  Don't get me confused.  I despise most if not all of them.  Not sure if Chuck's stint with FNM was a blessing or a curse, because the few songs Chuck recorded with FNM were my favorite of all of FNM's music. I'm a huge fan of Mike Patton too, It's just that what Mike did with FNM was inconsistent, where as the 2 records Chuck made were in the same vain.  I give all the praise in the world to what Mike Patton has accomplished.  No longer can people say "James Brown is the hardest working man in show business".  Mike Patton has taken that moniker to new heights with all the various and talent-laden music he's put out over a 20 year period. When I think of FNM, I hear Chuck's off key, out of tune, vocal style.  For years I often wondered where the hell Chuck went to.  You hear various rumors, lies, etc..  Not sure when the record is coming out, but I'm positive it wont be another travesty like Axel Rose's oft-delayed, finally released Chinese Democracy album. From what I've heard so far, it seems that Chuck hasn't lost a step.  Maybe even gaining more confidence with his vocal talent.  Some might disagree with me, that's fine.  Since the first time I heard Chuck sing, I've wanted more.  We should show him our devotion and give him respect he never really got.  Chuck, I say this with much enthusiasm, man we love you, we've missed you, and we're all excited to see one of the "Worst" singers of all time get back on top.  Thank You Chuck...we'll be waiting for where ever your vocal talent takes us...
