Don't let the scary cover art put you off. This greatest hits or "Grandes Excitos" package is one of
Willie Colon's best releases, containing 12 cuts that the salsa bandleader/trombonist recorded in the '70s and '80s for the Fania label. Kicking off album is the disco-tinged number "Amor Verdadero," followed by the equally stylized cut "Sin Poderte Hablar" (the disco and strings here shouldn't put one off either, since the arrangements are supremely tasteful). More straightforward salsa comes on
Colon originals like "Ah Ah O No" and "La Murga." Some of
Colon's past collaborations are also featured, including ones with
Celia Cruz ("Usted Abuso") and
Ruben Blades ("Buscando Guayaba"). A fine introduction to
Colon's catalog. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
