album review

The burgeoning southwestern United States "deathcore" scene gets another kick in the teeth from Knoxville, TN's Whitechapel with This Is Exile, their first full-length for Metal Blade. A quick glance at the cover art (razor wire, emaciated dude with a bag on his head) and the song titles ("Daemon [The Procreated]," "Messiahbolical") pretty much sums up what's inside, but Whitechapel (named for Jack the Ripper's preferred London hunting grounds) are capable of more than just eating the microphone and playing relentlessly fast -- standout cuts like "Possession," the instrumental "Death Becomes Him," and the blistering title cut, the latter of which yields the album's best lyric ("The world is ours and you're totally fucking dead"), are rarely predictable. To be sure, the "heavy, choppy chromatic riffs wrapped around an indecipherable monster voice" style that fuels the genre is well utilized, but around every corner is a sneaky melodic lead, time-signature change, or smart production trick that elevates This Is Exile above the usual death/metalcore sonic assault. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide

      • This is Exile- Whitechapel

      •
I picked this up from Hot Topic a couple days ago and was vary impressed. One thing you should know is this is my first review, I'm 13 and my music collection pretty damn diverse.
Starts off with Father of Lies, it sounds alot like it should be in the middle of the album but it's a great song. The lyrics are great and I can understand most of the words. Singer Phil Bozeman has a decent range of vocal sounds on this track. 9/10

This is Exile has a pretty cool intro after that it gets kinda boring. I like around 1:30 of the song has a good feel for it and makes the song alot better after that. 7/10
Possession
Possesion starts off alot like This Is Exile with a diferent intro, sounds somewhat like This Is Exile minus the high vocals and drums. This song goes pretty fast has some stops and I definetly dig it. 8/10

Song's good. Goes fast just like the others and you can understand the words if you have a good ear. The band has three guitarist but I really like em. They sound sick all in harmony. Im digging this band more and more as the album goes on 8.5/10
Another great song. Nuff said. Buy it!
Thats all for now, I hope i gave you a taste of what the album is like.

Only reviewed a few due to 2000 chars. Sorry
Album art is killer!
