album review

Rhino has had enormous success with its VH1-sponsored collections, whether it was 8-Track Flashback or The Big '80s. Usually, series lose steam as more editions are released, but VH1 The Big '80s: The Big Movies is the exception that proves the rule. Its success may be due to the fact that it has a specific theme -- it collects hit songs and rarities from soundtracks for such films as The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Ghostbusters. Not all of the songs are hits, but that doesn't matter -- the cuts that weren't hits are familiar through their inclusion in the films. It's nice to have such familiar numbers as "Oh Yeah," "Pretty in Pink," "If You Leave, " "Ghostbusters, " "Weird Science," "A Million Miles Away," "Don't You (Forget About Me), " "Bizarre Love Triangle," "To Live and Die in L.A." and "The Boys Are Back in Town" on one disc, but it's even nicer once you realize that many of these cuts are difficult to track down, even on various-artists collections. Consequently, The Big Movies is one of the most valuable '80s/new wave compilations to come along since Rhino's initial entry, the multi-volume Just Can't Get Enough series. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
