album review

Warner Music Group/BMG's Totally Hits 2002 was released just as 2002 was hitting its midway point, so it can't be said that it has all of the biggest hits of the year -- after all, the year still had seven months remaining. That said, this does an excellent job of summarizing the biggest hits of the first five months of the year, plus singles that were big in the last few months of 2001. The track listing is balanced pretty evenly between hip-hop, pop, R&B, and rock, with urban soul and rap having just a slight edge -- but that's because that's the genre with the best singles during this time. Some of these songs will likely be seen as singles that recall their time more than transcend it, but there are several great singles here -- Tweet's sexy "Oops (Oh My)," Pink's storming "Get the Party Started," Michelle Branch's sweetly anthemic "Everywhere," Jewel's best single "Standing Still," LeAnn Rimes' fine crossover attempt "Cant' Fight the Moonlight," Outkast's "The Whole World," Fat Joe's "What's Love," and Alanis Morissette's "Hands Clean." Few listeners will likely like every song here, but this captures the times very well, and there are certainly enough highlights to make this a good aural scrapbook. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
