album review

This four-disc Proper box lives up to its name with four CDs containing 99 cuts of pure honking joy by some of the most well-known bar walkers of the last century, along with some of the least known. There are multiple cuts by tenormen like Illinois Jacquet, Red Prysock, Wild Bill Moore, Arnett Cobb, Little Willie Jackson, Sam Taylor, Big Jay McNeely, and more. But there are amazing sides by Eddie Chamblee, Fats Noel, Hal Singer and Jack McVea as well. This is for those who dig their hardcore R&B, jump jazz and pre-rocking horns wild and raw. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
