album review

Sounds of the Seventies: 1974 is another fine entry in a fine series from the folks at Time-Life. It collects 20 songs that made the year what it was, while drawing from a wide range of styles and genres. It provides both a fine introduction to the year's music and a highly entertaining exercise in nostalgia, and either way it is a blast. This volume of the series mixes songs by big artists like Joni Mitchell ("Help Me"), Eric Clapton ("I Shot the Sheriff"), Lynyrd Skynyrd ("Sweet Home Alabama"), and Grand Funk Railroad ("The Loco-Motion") with tracks by one-hit wonders like David Essex ("Rock On"), Carl Douglas ("Kung Fu Fighting"), Billy Swan ("I Can Help"), and Maria Muldaur ("Midnight at the Oasis") and comes off sounding like a happening hour of '70s radio. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
