Sounds of the Seventies: 1970 is another fine entry in a fine series from Time -Life. It collects 21 songs that made the year what it was, while drawing from a wide range of styles and genres. It provides both a fine introduction to the year's music and a highly entertaining exercise in nostalgia, and either way it is a blast. The highlights range from the sublime (
Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "Tears of a Clown,"
Van Morrison's "Domino") to the fairly ridiculous (
the Jaggerz's "The Rapper,"
Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky") with plenty of classic rock and pop greatness in between (
the Jackson 5's "ABC,"
James Taylor's "Fire and Rain,"
the Bee Gees' "Lonely Days"). ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
