album review

Sounds of the Seventies: 1970 - Take Two is another fine entry in a fine series from Time-Life that picks up where Sounds of the Seventies: 1970 leaves off. It collects another 21 songs that made the year what it was, while drawing from a wide range of styles and genres. It provides both a fine introduction to the year's music and a highly entertaining exercise in nostalgia, and either way it is a blast. The highlights range from the heavy classic rock of Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" and Santana's "Evil Ways" to the frivolous pop of Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime" and the Shocking Blue's "Venus." This volume of 1970s hits contains more soul, picking up great hits from Tyrone Davis ("Turn Back the Hands of Time") and Eddie Holman ("Hey There Lonely Girl") and a hidden gem from Aretha Franklin ("Don't Play That Song"). ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
