Hillbilly Music ... Thank God!, Vol. 1 is a 24-track, double-LP/single-disc collection of proto-Bakersfield, hillbilly and honky tonk music from the Capitol Records vaults. All of the material on the compilation was recorded between the late '40s and the mid-'50, and most of these artists are from the West Coast, which means this music has a different flavor than the Nashville-based honky tonk of the same era. Hillbilly Music is also filled with rarities from the likes of Buck Owens, Tommy Collins, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Hank Thompson, Jean Shepard, Merle Travis, Rose Maddox and Tex Ritter. Though there are a handful of lesser items on the compilation, Hillbilly Music is a historical document of the best kind -- it's entertaining and educational. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide
