album review
Reflecting what a strong year 2001 was for most kinds of music, Grammy Nominees 2002 collects a surprisingly diverse range of songs by new and time-tested acts alike. As with the previous Grammy compilations, this volume concentrates on the nominees for some of the most prominent categories: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Male Pop Performance, and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal. While the collection only shows an edge on Outkast's epic "Miss Jackson" and "Honest With Me," from Bob Dylan's raucous return to form Love & Theft, it does include many of 2001's definitive singles, ranging from Alicia Keys' "Fallin'" to David Gray's "Babylon" to the Soggy Bottom Boys' "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow." Other highlights include Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like a Bird," Craig David's "Fill Me In," and R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life." An overall decent round-up of some of 2001's biggest musical moments, Grammy Nominees 2002 doesn't break the boundaries of pop music, but it does show just how inclusive the mainstream has become. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
