album review

Something of a Now That's What I Call Music! for dance rather than pop music, Global Hits 2002 features a CD's worth of the most popular dance songs in 2002. All of the songs appear in radio-ready edited format, allowing Universal to cram a total of 19 songs onto the CD, including these highlights: iio's "Rapture (Tastes So Sweet)," Roger Sanchez's "Another Chance," Daft Punk's "One More Time," and Craig David's "Re-Rewind." The other 15 songs are undoubtedly hits, though not quite in the same echelon, at least in North America. In fact, that's partly the problem with this collection -- though these songs are all international hits (particularly in the U.K.), you wouldn't know that if you lived in North America, where only the aforementioned four highlights made much of an impression on mainstream consciousness. However, all of the songs here are great; there's no questioning that, assuming, of course, that you like the poppier and more accessible side of dance music. For those who like their dance music a little more challenging and innovative, this is definitely not the place to look; these songs are pure pop, most of them featuring vocals and some sort of memorable hook. After all, the songs are hit songs for a reason. As an added bonus, the collection is mixed DJ-style, resulting in a more continuous listen. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
