album review

After an exhaustive five-year litigation battle between the band and their label management, Tool offer up the latest chapter in their musical self-discovery in Lateralus. Make no mistake, this is a prog rock record, reminiscent of King Crimson and Meddle-era Pink Floyd, with a hint of Rush mutated with Tool's signature sonic assault on the ears. Lateralus demands close listening from the first piece onward, as it becomes quickly apparent that this is not going to be an album one can listen to and accept at face value. Complex rhythm changes, haunting vocals, and an onslaught of changes in dynamics make this an album other so-called metal groups could learn from. While some compositions seem out of place, others fit together seamlessly, such as the 23-minute song cycle serving as the climax and resolution of the album. However, the album's most disturbing moment arrives at the end, with dissonant electronic noises placed randomly with a drum solo over a phone call to a talk show discussing the secrets behind Area 51, once again serving as a symbolic gesture from the band encouraging people not to take things at face value and to think for themselves. Overall, a solid, well-produced album from a band that never fails to deliver with each release. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

      • This is Danny's album.

      • Just as 10,000 days is Maynard's, Undertow is Adam's and Aenima is Justin's, this is Danny's baby. Danny is never one to hold back on trying new things, but this takes the cake. Polyrhythms, different time signatures and dynamics... Mr.Carey opened a new door in the hallway of drumming. As a long time bass player myself, I can only dream of a drummer that good!

      • Tool's Masterpiece

      • This is Tool's greatest achievement thus far, a powerful magnum opus of prog metal and anger. An excellent addition to any collection.

      • Meaning of Life?

      • This album is the benchmark of prog rock, metal, and art rock of the modern age. From the intro track ( The Grudge ) to the last track ( Faaip de Oiad ) this album will leave you in stunning disbelief that 4 men could actually create something as beautiful as this. With canning lyrics to unimaginable time signatures Lateralus ( the ablum ) has left the biggest influence on me since the creation of the bed. The whole album can be arranged in different order called The Fibbocani Sequence which 1 2 3 5 8 13 4 6 7 9 10 11 12, this track listing is a far more flowing order than the original tracklisting. Lateralus ( the song ) is most beautiful song I have heard in my life with such a great meaning behind it. Please Do Not download a copy of this album, buy it!

      • Inspirational album.

      • Maynard really did his research for this album's lyrics. It is a perfect companion for anyone who is is the process of soul-searching for a deeper meaning to life. The rest of the band also does an amazing job of bringing the songs to life and giving them a primal beat that hits it home. From the amazing mathematical beats of Lateralus to the memorable bass line of schism and all the way to the dedicated Eon Blue Apocalypse (Adam's dedication to his deceased dog) Lateralus truly has it all.
