album review

For their third release, Tool explore the progressive rock territory previously forged by such bands as King Crimson. However, Tool are conceptually innovative with every minute detail of their art, which sets them apart from most bands. Make no mistake, this isn't your father's rock record. Sonically, the band has never sounded tighter. Long exploratory passages are unleashed with amazing precision, detail, and clarity, which only complements the aggressive, abrasive shorter pieces on the album. There is no compromise from any member of the band, with each of them discovering the dynamics of his respective instrument and pushing the physical capabilities to the limit. Topics such as the philosophies of Bill Hicks (eloquently eulogized in the packaging), evolution and genetics, and false martyrdom will fly over the heads of casual listeners. But those listening closely will discover a special treat: a catalyst encouraging them to discover a world around them to which they otherwise might have been blind. If these aren't good enough reasons to listen to Ænima, then just trust the simple fact that Tool deliver the hard rock goods every time the band chooses to release something. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

      • What hasn't been said about this one?!? Justin blew me away. He was this relatively unheard of British bass player of the band "Peach". Tool needed to replace the vacancy left by Paul. Justin was the right man for the job. The way Justin and Danny gel, is almost something of a myth. Personally, I listened to this album on my Walkman everyday, while walking to and from high school (and in most of my classes). I tried my best to find ANY flaw in this recording. I couldn't. After years in college studying music, I still can't. This recording is the foundation of the best rock band ever....

      • I don't know if anyone else has tried, but you can sync up this album with Tim Burton's "The NIghtmare Before Christmas".  It works pretty well too

      • AT = After Tool

      • I never really got into music as much until this album. I always liked it a lot but the way this album drew me in made me feel it in a different way. The tingles or rush I could get from certain songs blew me away. So I listened differently after Tool thus AT. Music AT is sweet. I love all Tool but for me this album was their greatest.
