album review

This collection of 20 Bible and biblical-influenced songs features the cherubic vocals of the St. John's Children's Choir accompanied mostly by piano and synthesized percussion. The album successfully strikes a balance between reverence and singalong fun, making the songs' lyrics and pace easy enough to follow while never straying from the overarching message, which essentially is that Jesus loves everyone, created everything, and everyone is happy as a result. In fact, two of the album's strongest songs are "Oh Happy Day" and "I'm H-A-P-P-Y." The former switches up the sonic motif of the record with a finger-popping girl group arrangement, while the latter will surely provide plenty of singalong fun with its spelling out of principal words in the song. Elsewhere, "Kum Ba Ya" and the big closer "All Things Bright and Beautiful" strike a more introspective, campfire note, although they're not as somber as perhaps they should have been. While there's no reason to make anyone sad during an album called Baby's Best: Bible Songs, a concession to lower-key contemplation might have been nice just to offset the album's relentlessly bright outlook. After all, the world needs rain showers just as much as sunny days. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
