album review

On their eighth album, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace, the Offspring rant about George W. Bush's America and all the crass consumerism accompanying it, and also snipe at dance beats on "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" -- complete with a "dance f***er dance" chorus -- which is par for the course for the Offspring, who always seems to get a neo-novelty tune out of some rhythm or fad they don't like. Nothing changes their attitude or their attack, as they still favor frenzied downstroked guitars and shout-along choruses. Still, the Offspring can't quite hide the passing of time, as they start to drift into power ballads and angsty anthems like "Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?," which feels tailor-made for a CW TV show. Such softening of their stance illustrates that it's impossible to avoid maturity. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • A very fun distraction

      • I really like this album.  Even though it lacks the humor found on previous albums it still is a very entertaining album to listen to.  In my opinion all the songs on this album are great and are definitely worth listening to at least once.  I honestly thought this album would be a fluke when I first heard news of it (I honestly didn't enjoy Splinter very much so I didn't expect much) but this album has exceeded my expectations by a lot.  For one thing, this songs on this album definitely harken to differents eras of The Offspring's history.  For example, Stuff Is Messed Up is certianly a tribute to their early days while songs like Half-Truism and A Lot Like Me show signs of maturity.  The band also shows an emotional side with Fix You and A Lot Like Me.  The only weak song in the album is Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?  Even though it seems like a good song after a listen or two, it doesn't seem like the band really put enough effort into the lyrics and such and in comparison to the others it just doesn't hold up.  Still, it's not a bad song to listen to every once in a while.  Even though this album isn't very groundbreaking, it still is very enjoyable to listen to and that's really what The Offspring is about.  I recommend this to both hardcore and casual listeners of any type of rock.

      • Good, 3.5/5 - 4/5

      • It's really hard to give this album a real rating, because there are some really good songs, and some songs that aren't even worth listening to. The Offspring show their maturity in "Half-Truism" and "Hammerhead," and go back to their roots in "Stuff Is Messed Up" and "Trust in You" (which actually sounds like "Smash"). "Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?" is meaningful, talking about sexual molestation, but it seems too weak for any Offspring album, and just because it has meaning doesn't necessarily make it good. Billy Talent did a song called "" on a similar subject, and it really is good. "Fix You" is just plain old silly, as if one of the greatest modern punk bands was running out of ideas. "Rise and Fall" sounds a lot like "" by Green Day , and this is where I start to question this album. However, the pluses outweigh the minuses, and it definitely is an album that Offspring fans should buy.

Good songs: Half-Truism, You're Gonna Go Far, Kid, Hammerhead, Stuff Is Messed Up

      • THIS!

      • A reccomended band. The offspring has always entertained me with its punk-like rifs and sharp attitudes, i dont think anybody has held a reputation like the Offspring, and with their current release of a new album, they are still one of my top bands! This is one band, if you havent gotten into them yet, you really dont know what your missing!

      • Very Offspring-ie

      • The last physical CD I purchased in a store was 10 years ago. It was Americana. I was in the store and saw this album and bought it and haven't stopped playing it. Some songs aren't as good as others, but it is very much a mix of the sounds of Offspring. Some songs are the more gritty sounding and others are the newer style.<br/>My Favs are:<br/>You're gonna go far kid<br/>Half-Truism<br/>The rest are growing on me more and more.

      • Offspring's genre?alternative?

      • This album in my opinion sounded very much alternative when The Offspring were more punk rockers. <br/>Like one reviewer before me some songs may sound familiar and have catchy rhythms, while others you may hate because they don't sound like the typical Offspring people have grown to know. <br/>, , and are among the best songs on this album. Dexter Holland still can pull off the memorable Offspring lyrics and "singing" he is known for, Noodles still has all of his signature riffs and attitude (if not more) from the previous albums.<br/>A good addition to the growing number of Offspring albums, definitely worth a listen for fans of the band and rockers looking for new music.

      • A mix of Old and New

      • If you were a fan of the older albums, there are parts of this album you will enjoy, and parts you will hate.<br/>If you were a fan of their newer albums, its the same thing for you as well.<br/>Personally, I enjoy the songs  and .  The song Hammerhead is like every other Offspring single lately, and brings back the pop sound of their latest albums.<br/>But still, there is a decent mix in this album that it is definitely worth checking out.

      • More of the same.

      • It's easy to say that the Offspring are back on their toes; after the poppy rubbish of Splinter, Americana, and most of Conspiracy Of One. It was widely assumed that the Offspring had gone soft.<br/><br/>Still, you would think they could at least turn in some more original material on R&FR&G. The absolutely classic riff of Smash's Self Esteem has been ripped off by countless other bands, but I would never have expected the Offspring themselves to re-use it in You're Gonna Go Far, Kid. Lyrics are a little cliched as well unfortunately, as the lead single Hammerhead demonstrates during the second half. How many times have you heard 'valley of the shadow of death' in a song in recent years? I don't think it's because there's too much power metal in the mainstream.<br/><br/>Highlights though that save the album are tracks like A Lot Like Me: a piano intro, followed by a bass line, followed by low key vocals, then a scream and bursting riff. This particular song has a chorus that's, for lack of a better word, epic enough to rival Offspring classics like Gone Away. Another key track would be the opener, Half-Truism, where Dex shouts urgently 'If we don't make it alive / it's a hell of a good day to die.'<br/><br/>Even if the Offspring are way past their prime, Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace is a step back in the right direction. An increased runtime in comparison to Splinter doesn't hurt either.
