album review

Terra 2001 is the second full-length album from the Japanese alternative rock trio The Brilliant Green. Released on Sony Records, The Brilliant Green's Terra 2001 is a slickly produced album that is comprised of eleven songs, the majority of which are sung in English by bilingual lead singer Tomoko Kawase. From a song about breaking up with a boy to a song that describes a somewhat psychedelic love affair with a cat named Brownie, Tomoko Kawase's cute vocal timbre contrasts interestingly with a standardized alternative rock sound. Kawase is backed up by official Green members Shunsaku Okuda on bass and Ryo Matsui on guitar. For the sake of this recording, the trio is joined by drummer Yasou Sano, keyboard player Takahiro Itoh, percussionist Mataroh Misawa, and acoustic guitarist Motoki Matsuoka. The songs on Terra 2001 may remind one of a number of 1990's female fronted alternative rock and folk acts. For example, the first track sounds a bit like No Doubt, the second like the Indigo Girls and the third - the one about Brownie the cat - a bit like Liz Phair. Other acts that are reminiscent of the sound on Terra 2001 include Sheryl Crow and The Cardigans. The liner notes contain song lyrics (English songs have Japanese translations) and a number of photographs depicting - among other things - the coquettish Tomoko Kawase sitting in a limo with her two band mates, licking ice cream cones and waving magic wands while wearing a tiara and a bee costume. ~ John Vallier, All Music Guide
