album review

The last Beatles album to be recorded (although Let It Be was the last to be released), Abbey Road was a fitting swan song for the group, echoing some of the faux-conceptual forms of Sgt. Pepper, but featuring stronger compositions and more rock-oriented ensemble work. The group was still pushing forward in all facets of its art, whether devising some of the greatest harmonies to be heard on any rock record (especially on "Because"), constructing a medley of songs/vignettes that covered much of side two, adding subtle touches of Moog synthesizer, or crafting furious guitar-heavy rock ("The End," "I Want You (She's So Heavy)," "Come Together"). George Harrison also blossomed into a major songwriter, contributing the buoyant "Here Comes the Sun" and the supremely melodic ballad "Something," the latter of which became the first Harrison-penned Beatles hit. Whether Abbey Road is the Beatles' best work is debatable, but it's certainly the most immaculately produced (with the possible exception of Sgt. Pepper) and most tightly constructed. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

      • Abbey Road, indeed

      • I hate to label anything the best or the worst.  All I know is this album is good for any mood, any setting, any friends that might be over.  I guess that could qualify it for the best "Something" (please forgive).  I have always loved it and I shall always love it.

      • Happy Album

      • This album released in 1969 was the last that the Beatles did as a complete group. However, the popular belief that it was a rather unhappy album, with the end of the group looming close, is untrue. George Martin said that the fact that they all knew that this was the end allowed them to work together harmoniously and with love. It shows in every tune on the record.
One should never commit the attrocity of skipping any of the songs when listening. The album is set up to fit together, especially after "You Never Give Me Your Money".

      • The Best

      • Easily the Beatles' best album. Everything about it, from the iconic cover to the unforgettable songs screams "classic". The entire album flows very nicely, especially the medley at the last half of it. Golden Slumbers/Carry that Weight/The End are some of my favourite Beatles tunes.  Recommended for any fan of Rock music, whether they be a fan of the Beatles or not.
