album review

System of a Down's self-titled major-label debut finds the Los Angeles band consolidating its gothic alt-metal, sharpening its deadly riffs, strengthening its brutal rhythms, and adding muscle to its attack. The band differentiates itself from the legions of Southern Californian alt-metalheads by emphasizing its Armenian musical heritage, which gives the music an eerie, otherworldly quality. Part of the success of System of a Down lies with producer Rick Rubin, who helps give the band focus, but ultimately the record works because of the band itself, since they have contributed a set of strong songs that illustrates this is a band that relies on smarts as well as sound. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • Very good album.

      • This album is great. A must have for any metal fans. Sugar, Spiders, and War? are my favorites on here.

      • overlooked and underrated

      • this is a great debut album, by two of the songs that i've heard, sugar and spiders, and in's underrated compared to the success of toxicty and forward, but this is up there with the other albums, becoming one of the pioneers for the new american wave

      • !!!

      • This is by far my favorite SOAD album. The sound is great, but most
importantly, it sounds like they are having fun performing. This album
feels like it's from the heart more than any other.

I've had to buy this cd about 5-6 times because, I listened to it too
much, and my cd wore out :-/. I'm glad my music is safe on my zune...
except I don't have the parental advisory one...Zune thinks I do...
