album review

The code of the schoolyard demands laughter at farts, balls, and the sex lives of animals. That same directive guides Every Solution Has its Problem, the Columbia debut of Florida-based goof-offs Start Trouble. Toilet bowl humor, drug references, and surgeon general's warnings are taken right to the precipice of bad taste, aligning Trouble with types like Bloodhound Gang, blink-182, groups committed to upholding the towel-slapping legacy of Licensed to Ill. Musically, Start Trouble tries on melodic punk revivalism for "Graduation" and "Get Over It", but sticks mainly to a workmanlike modern rock sound reminiscent of late-'90s outfits like The Flys or Lit. "Please Leave" and "Non Stop" subsist on prurience ("I wanna f*** non-stop/Baby I think you're beautiful") and the showy production/mixing of John Travis, while "Chemical" shifts into a Sublime-ish reggae shuffle and "Diggin' Holes" drifts into clunky alt.rock balladry. Every Solution Has Its Problem also includes a rocked-up cover version of the Ludacris hit "Move Bitch". [The album was also issued in an edited-for-content form.] ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
