album review

Sonic Youth made their first moves toward rock with EVOL, a stunningly fluent mixture of avant-garde instrumentation and subversions of rock & roll. The band benefits greatly from the addition of structure, which gives its aural experiments a firm grounding, but the addition of drummer Steve Shelley is essential to the group's new, dangerous edge. With the added propulsion, the fearless rush of "Expressway to Yr Skull" (aka "Madonna, Sean and Me") and the near-pop of "Green Light" are undeniably powerful as are the eerie textures of "Shadow of a Doubt." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • A very short review of EVOL

      • Dull, technical, formatted, and even watered-down reviews wouldn’t do this album justice, to be blunt, EVOL’s genius creates a sound and mood that feels like a heavy abuse of pain killers. Simply, it’s sound is the sounds and thought patterns of opiate-like addiction, although not the intent, the best way to describe a definite must for fans and collectors alike.
Sonic Youth’s 3rd studio release(1986) blends abstract songs(in contrast to that of Daydream Nation, their first more ‘concrete’ approach to song structure) with somewhat dismal-feeling songs (In contrast to their more energetic and melodic sound they would later utilize in albums such as Rather Ripped or Sonic Nurse, which utilizes climaxes with the melodic and, well ‘sonic’)
The title a literary appropriateness, EVOL could be a darker and backwards version of LOVE, which is usually considered a positive and pleasant thing, although not always true. Another way to look at EVOL is the sounds and feelings completely opposite from that of LOVE, or feeling of life without love or a love.
Again, opiates, a perfect theme for the album, either the backwards approach which is more sinister and closely resembling ‘evil’, or that sedated feeling one can get with LOVE.
Although Sonic Youth never really had to prove this, this album certainly captures/shows an almost rare and unique creative maturity early in the band’s career.
