album review

Sonata Arctica's Silence basically sounds like Europe with the chops of Dream Theater. The record has all the glossy, non-threatening professionalism of '80s-style, pop-based prog metal: soaring, multi-tracked vocals, virtuosic instrumental passages, and clean, airbrushed production polish. Fans of the genre will appreciate Sonata Arctica's commitment to the style. ~ Andy Hinds, All Music Guide

      • The End of This Chapter

      • Silence holds an incredible amount of substance. It is one of the greatest albums I have ever had the pleasure to hear, and definitely a triumph for power metal. The album eases in with an opening track: ...Of Silence, which sets the mood and theme for the rest of the masterpiece. We are introduced to Nick Van Eckmann (I think that's how you spell it) and his incredible narrating voice. The track speeds into Weballergy, a fast and somewhat morally-attuned piece that speaks of online dating. The speed of the album is not slowed at all with the next track: False News Travel Fast. It is a somewhat tragic and sweet song about a man who is not who he seems to be, with lyrics like; Standing on the station, watching your train slowly disappear...I am a shell of a man...I thought you knew who I am and But I am still your man, and for you I do all I can The following track is the start of the "Stalker Series" Tony Kakko (vocalist) has created. The End of This Chapter is a creepy, yet heartbreaking tale of a man who stalks the woman he once loved. (This story is continued on their later albums, Reckoning Night's 'Don't Say a Word' and Unia's 'Caleb')Black Sheep really gets your pulse going with a very melodic and catchy riff; The lyrics are based on a book, the title translated from Finnish to English could be "The Howling Miller". It is a very sad song about a miller who is a black sheep where he lives, and he is unable to face a maiden that he may love. The track Land of the Free is a song about justice, maybe censorship, with all the catchiness of the rest of the album. The break in the middle is quite powerful as well. An all-time favorite ballad from the band is Last Drop Falls. The lyrics are of a man who can't seem to say '
