album review

This is a melodically stunning record in which instrumentation strikes the disc's first chord. "Rebirthing" is a grand opening statement. Guitarist Ben Kasica cooks a delectable platter of tasty lead fills that are accompanied by orchestral tones all over the disc. The same is true of the title track, "Comatose." Here the band uses a proven recipe -- staccato guitars, piano, and orchestration -- to bring the tune home. "The Last Night" feels like classic Skillet. The tune boasts a feel-good chorus that shouts "radio-friendly." The same can be said for "Yours to Hold," as John Cooper's familiar vocals and warm vibe emanate from the tune. The same sensation strikes the track "The Older I Get." Here, the tune is once again radio-ready with an infectious, singable chorus. Comatose is a record that sustains on many levels. Cooper is really on target. Quiet moments like "Say Goodbye" are effectively woven with heavier moments like "Those Nights." When guitar progressions meet piano nuances, special things happen with this band. ~ Steven Douglas Losey, All Music Guide

      • a must-have!

      • the album Comatose delivers powerful and meaningful lyrics, combined with some sick guitar, with a very nice piano underneath it (or, as the main melody, like in Last Night). yes, Skillet is a Christian band, but unless you have that in mind already, you may not even know it as you listen. this album is definitely a must-have if you enjoy well-written and hard-hitting lyrics, with some hard rock music to go along with it.

      • LYRICS FULL OF HOPE AND LOVE!

      • SKILLET's songs are not only extremely well composed, with plenty of rhythm changes and variations, but their lyrics are full of hope for those who might not realize they are listening to a Christian band. I found this tasteful band as a great resource for getting people closer to Christ, in its very own, unique way. Highy recommended for hard rock and metal lovers. A+

      • I love this album

      • All i can say is i love t his album.<br/> Ever since their self-titled debut album, Skillet has been known for great music and mind-blinding lyrics. Things like "I'm going to drown you in maddening forgiveness..." (from "Hey, You, I love your Soul" of the album with the same name) and "Soak my heart in Gasoline/Light a match and consume me..." (from "Gasoline", self-titled debut) truly made this critic anxious to see what their seventh full-length production would bring -- both lyrically and musically. After six albums, one would think that there's not much life left. <br/><br/>And one would be wrong. <br/><br/>"Comatose" opens up with their first single: "Rebirthing," a beautiful mix of power and emotion, which sets the pace for the rest of the album. Filled with piano, strings and the angelic voice of Korey Cooper, the emotion is not lacking throughout the length of the album. However, it is filled with enough guitar riffs and catchy beats that maintain the "Skillet" hard-rock flavor we've all come to know and love. The orchestral elements prove the musical genius that Skillet was capable of. Versatile, beautiful and powerful -- Skillet has, once again, raised the bar for themselves and their contemporaries. <br/><br/>Skillet's sound in "Comatose" is much more complete and mature. Now, it's about much more than the crunchy music. It's a complete experience. <br/><br/>If you like exceptionally-made hard-rock music with elements of piano and stings, or if you're a "Pan-Head" (like me!) this is a must buy.
