album review

Sade's fourth album, Love Deluxe, included the hit "No Ordinary Love" and marked a return to the detached cool jazz backing and even icier vocals that made her debut album a sensation. Although Sade's style is more suggestive than hypnotic and her production and arrangements are in an urbane mode rather than a jazz one, she maintained her popularity among the fusion and urban contemporary audiences. This release also includes "Mermaid," "Pearls," and "Feel No Pain." ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

      • Essential Sade

      • When Love Deluxe came out in 1992, she was kind of foreign to me.  I didn't even know how to pronounce her name, but when her video came on Midnight Love on BET, I knew that this was a high production quality video and wouldn't stay on just the late night time slot for long.  Sure enough, No Ordinary Love burned up the chart and kept heads nodding with its mellow groove.  Love Deluxe was plastered all over the front of all record stores in the mall and everywhere else.  I had to get in the act.  It took me a while to listen to the whole CD, in fact I thought it was kinda dissapointing.  However, it slowly grew on me and after listening to past hits and cuts from previous CD's, I realized how crucial this album was to bridge a whole generation of hip hoppers to Jazz and R&B.  Of course, Video Soul was still on BET and mainly dominated by R&B acts, so the hip hop revolution hadn't quite called the curtain on Donny Simpson just yet.  Every R&B and Jazz head seemed to be in the know when you talked about Sade as if she symbolized a secret music movement.  Not a secret to her fans, this album is essential to any lover of R&B.  There are no bad moments on this album, but the standouts are No Ordinary Love, a long ballad about the ups and down of a relationship and the love that had kept them through the good and bad times; I Couldn't Love You More is a great groove; Kiss of Life illustrates Sade's outstanding writing in making you feel connected to her feelings with a matching groove that shows how well her band blends together in a seamless style; Cherish the Day features the best live played bassline I've ever heard.  Every song shows off just a piece of Sade's style but in total the album is a Tour de Force of writing and instrumental and everything that makes Sade, Sade!
