album review

Pink Floyd followed the commercial breakthrough of Dark Side of the Moon with Wish You Were Here, a loose concept album about and dedicated to their founding member Syd Barrett. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it's arguably even more impressive, showcasing the group's interplay and David Gilmour's solos in particular. And while it's short on actual songs, the long, winding soundscapes are constantly enthralling. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • Best. Floyd. Album. Ever.

      • Despite it's deceptively short tracklisting, this is my favorite Floyd album bar-none. I know Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall are the stalwart choices for fav but this album is too perfect from front to back to be neglected and it doesn't matter my mood I love it.

      • I'm Here???

      • Wish You Were Here, is the follow up of Pink Floyd's brilliant work on The Dark Side of the Moon. This album is pretty much a dedication to Syd Barrett ( the original guitar player and vocalist ). The album's texturing is probably the far most in-depth of its kind. The track listing is 5 songs, with first and last track expanding over 10 minutes, and the 3 other tracks getting real meaty with meaning. Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts 1 and 2 are great epics, with total emotion being felt through out the songs.

      • Wish You Were Here

      • I would say that the concept of
Wish You Were Here is a looping history of Pink Floyd. See, a long time
ago (the 60s, to be precise) in a galaxy far far away (London's
underground scene), there was a band. That band was Pink Floyd. And
there was a man who lead that band. His name was Syd Barrett. He didn't
found the band (at least not in the strict "I'm going to form a band
and we're going to do acid-music" sort of way), but he did make the
band. He was the band, in almost the same way that Tom Petty was Tom
Petty and the Heartbreakers. The band got popular, cut a deal with EMI,
and made an album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. And then Syd went nuts
from the pressure. He became less and less capable of playing with and
contributing to the band and was, more or less booted from the band.
Then Pink Floyd became an obscure, avant-garde band with albums like
Music from the film More, Ummagumma, and Atom Heart Mother. And then
they made Dark Side of the Moon. I could quote sales figures and
numbers, but it suffices to say that it sold well. Suddenly,
Pink Floyd were popular. And it seemed that Roger Waters, the bassist
who had taken the band upon his shoulders, would suffer the same fate
as his old friend. But Rog held on, making Wish You Were Here, Animals,
The Wall, and The Final Cut with the band before persuing a solo career.
