Danny Elfman and partisans streamline their band's sound, name, and raison d'etre from their last appearance. The Mystic Knights moniker is gone, as is the half-Cab Calloway-half-Pac-Man musical mishmash. Oingo Boingo emerge on this debut EP on the cutting edge of the new wave movement. Watertight production, crip drums, blazing synths, and short blasts of guitar characterize the new sound, and Elfman's voice is still a trembling, unwholesome yodel. Bluesman Willie Dixon gets a nod in a revivalist ska redux of "Violent Love." "Only a Lad" is still one of the greatest anti-me generation anthems ever. ~ Christian Huey, All Music Guide
