album review

This is one case where the legend really precedes the record itself. Cut for about 600 dollars in Jack Endino's studio over just a matter of days, this captures Nirvana at a formative stage, still indebted to the murk that became known as grunge, yet not quite finding their voice as songwriters. Which isn't to say that they were devoid of original material, since even at this stage Kurt Cobain illustrated signs of his considerable songcraft, particularly on the minor-key ballad "About a Girl" and the dense churn of "Blew." A few songs come close to that level, but that's more a triumph of sound than structure, as "Negative Creep" and "School" get by on attitude and churn, while the cover of "Love Buzz" winds up being one of the highlights because this gives a true menace to their sound, thanks to its menacing melody. The rest of it sinks into the sludge, as the group itself winds up succumbing to grinding sub-metallic riffing that has little power, due to lack of riffs and lack of a good drummer. Bleach is more than a historical curiosity since it does have its share of great songs, but it isn't a lost classic -- it's a debut from a band that shows potential but haven't yet achieved it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • Big Cheese and Negative Creep are so much better than About a Girl and Love Buzz. Any real Nirvana fan knows that Kurt would have despised those songs had he know the posthumous PR they got. Not to mention, Love Buzz is a cover! It's a shame Spank Thru (the first ever Nirvana song) didn't make it onto the recording of Bleach. Downer didn't either. It was added on the second pressing. I have a first run tape of Bleach I got in California, circa 1990, that is so worn out, you can hardly make out some of the songs anymore:)

Rock on fellow Nirvana fans! If you have any questions about the band and are having a tough time getting the answer, I may be able to assist. Go get Hormoaning and the Outcesticides!! I also have a bunch of bootleg Nirvana stuff. If you promise not to tell Courtney, I may share some;-)

      • My least favorite album of my favorite band. I like every song and love some (love buzz, blew, about a girl). Its definetly the most grunge like dirtay said. I would have liked to see more varied songs, to me they all besides about a girl, blew and love buzz have the same "feel". Although School could possibly be my favorite LIVE song on muddy banks of wishkah and also negative creep is a damn good one too.
1. In Utero
2. Nevermind
3. Incesticide
4. Bleach

      • A lot of Nirvana's best songs are on here that are underrated and underheard , like love buzz, blew, and about a girl which make it probably my favorite nirvana albums and my favorite album. If you are just listening to nevermind and haven't heard this or in utero i highly recommend getting this album. It's definetly the most "grunge" of all the nirvana albums

      • This is an amazig album

      • I think that this is one of Nirvana's best albums (next to In Utero) but even so it IS amazing and is better than anything heard on Nevermind.
Kurt was a genius but not for the songs that most people think. "Bleach" is THE album of the 80's to me. You can go ahead and say how many better albums you think that there were in the 80's but it won't change my opinion that's for sure.

10/10
