album review

Judging from the way Dark Passion Play starts out, it's understandable to assume that it's some sort of opera aria. But hold tight, dear friends, because from out of nowhere metal guitar riffs come swooping in. That's Nightwish for ya -- a Finnish quintet that had been walking the line between symphonic and metallic for ten years by the time of this 2007 release. The album signals the arrival of new singer Anette Olson (who replaced longtime member Tarja Turunen), but for longtime fans worried that this lineup shuffle may alter the band's sound and direction, there's no reason to fret -- Nightwish are as bombastic and dramatic as ever. Understandably, there are quite a few similarities between symphonic metal and prog metal, and this is certainly the case on such tracks as "Bye Bye Beautiful," which contains a very Dream Theater-esque opening. Elsewhere, "Eva" focuses primarily on the vocal talents of Nightwish's new frontwoman, while the slow-building album opener, "The Poet and the Pendulum," proves to be a neat summary of Nightwish's style. Depending on which side of the metal fence you're on, Dark Passion Play is either a symphonic metal triumph or merely pretentious twaddle. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

      • BEST. ALBUM. EVER!

      • I cannot say how much I love this album or Nightwish. They are gods when it comes to symphonic power metal. This is the album that started it all for me. Ever since buying this album, I've gone and collected all of Nightwish's back catalog (even going so far as to import Century Child and Over the Hills and Far Away from the UK) and this album is the best out of anything they have ever released (Once comes VERY close though). Dark Passion Play contains the best song ever written in the history of mankind, and that song is... "The Poet and the Pendulum"  This song is so awesome that I break out into goosebumps whenever I hear this song. Some of the other album standouts include "Bye Bye Beautiful", "Amaranth (The song that made me a Nightwish fan), "Cadence of Her Last Breath", "Master Passion Greed" (heaviest Nightwish song ever in all it's thrashy goodness :)). Come to think of it, the whole album is EPIC! BUY IT! You will not be dissappointed.

      • Epic is the one word that decribs DPP. if you can get the Collectors edition i highly suggest you do beacuse it comes with a bonus CD that is vocals free, its all the music from the default DPP but no voices. it really lets you listen to the music. i have to say this is one of my fav CD's
