album review

After the muddled production and ultracomplicated song structures of ...And Justice for All, Metallica decided that they had taken the progressive elements of their music as far as they could and that a simplification and streamlining of their sound was in order. While the assessment made sense from a musical standpoint, it also presented an opportunity to commercialize their music, and Metallica accomplishes both goals. The best songs are more melodic and immediate, the crushing, stripped-down grooves of "Enter Sandman," "Sad but True," and "Wherever I May Roam" sticking to traditional structures and using the same main riffs throughout; the crisp, professional production by Bob Rock adds to their accessibility. "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters" avoid the slash-and-burn guitar riffs that had always punctuated the band's ballads; the latter is a full-fledged love song complete with string section, which works much better than might be imagined. The song- and riff-writing slips here and there, a rare occurrence for Metallica, which some longtime fans interpreted as filler next to a batch of singles calculated for commercial success. The objections were often more to the idea that Metallica was doing anything explicitly commercial, but millions more disagreed. In fact, the band's popularity exploded so much that most of their back catalog found mainstream acceptance in its own right, while other progressively inclined speed metal bands copied the move toward simplification. In retrospect, Metallica is a good, but not quite great, album, one whose best moments deservedly captured the heavy metal crown, but whose approach also foreshadowed a creative decline. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

      • Solid Album

      • This was a solid album. After this, they turned towards hard rock. I don't count that against. them. So they changed their perspective...IT HAPPENS!! If you can't accept it, don't bash everyone who can. It's a great album, very moshworthy, and I'm happy with it. Enter Sandman is one of their best songs from the 90s. Point blank.

      • Pussification Begins....

      • I've long stated that this album is the beginning of the pussification of Metallica.  This is were they start to make their transformation from a thrash metal band to the hard rock genre.  I bought it when it came out and lent it to a friend and never asked for it back.  They have a larger group fans that can now deal with kind of slowed down commercialized metal.  This is were the "sell out" begins.  If you really want to listen to some thrash from abaout the same time, listen the Persistance of Time album from Anthrax.  They never sold out.

      • I agree

      • This is a good album but the reason that everyone says its the best is because enter sandman was the first video on MTV by metallica.  Thats why you hear fairweather fans always bring this album up.

      • Most mainstream...

      • ...yet still a very good and worthwhile album. Its defiantly their most methodical album, and it suffers slightly from the fact that Metallica changed their style this time, though I suppose its for the better, I recommend this nonetheless.

      • not their best

      • this isn't metallica's greatest album
the only reason why people like it is because of how popular this album is because of enter sandman
        it's not as heavy
        but it's good
but not DAMN!!! good to me
i like the unforgven from this album
but i like ...and justice for all more than this album
true fans i talk to say that ...and justice is their best
        not the black album

      • All around good

      • This is an all around good cd, but if you want their real s*&% check out Kill em All thru And Justice for All. Its an awesome cd but not their greatest.

      • Not ther best

      • I agree with Ricardihno52, so many people are obsessed with this album. Even on the radio, the only song I hear anything about is always enter sandman. The album is ok, but if you want their best, fastest, and long headbangers, then go listen to The Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets albums. Now those two are Metallica's best.
