album review

Delivered five years after their eponymous "black" album in 1991, Load captures Metallica settling into a period of maturation. Under the guidance of producer Bob Rock, Metallica have streamlined their sound, cutting away most of the twisting, unpredictable time signatures and the mind-numbingly fast riffs. What's left is polished heavy metal. They add in Southern boogie rock, country-rock, and power ballads to their bag of tricks, which make them sound like '70s arena rock holdovers. Metallica opens up their sound by concentrating on midtempo boogie -- over half the album is dedicated to songs that just groove. Metallica sound tight, but with the material they've written, they should sound loose. This becomes apparent as the songs fill out the album's nearly 80-minute running time. It isn't surprising to hear Metallica get a little more conservative as they get older. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • Country with a Metallica twist

      • I fell this is Metallica's softest album, I like it a lot actually but I still much prefer older Metallica...they became too mainstream (at least until Death Magnetic) and their music suffered for it, I still believe any Metallica fan should give it a listen nonetheless.

      • double album

      • they should of released Load and ReLoad as a double album, this way the album could of received receptions as good as ReLoad, and it would of been as popular as ReLoad

      • 9/10

      • It's a good album. Not as epic as the previous but still plays good music. It seems as if Bob Rock was slacking off and totally forgot about Metallica's roots in this one. I would recommend "King Nothing," "Hero Of the Day," and "Until It Sleeps."
