album review

The most immediately noticeable aspect of ...And Justice for All isn't Metallica's still-growing compositional sophistication or the apocalyptic lyrical portrait of a society in decay. It's the weird, bone-dry production. The guitars buzz thinly, the drums click more than pound, and Jason Newsted's bass is nearly inaudible. It's a shame that the cold, flat sound obscures some of the sonic details, because ...And Justice for All is Metallica's most complex, ambitious work; every song is an expanded suite, with only two of the nine tracks clocking in at under six minutes. It takes a while to sink in, but given time, ...And Justice for All reveals some of Metallica's best material. It also reveals the band's determination to pull out all the compositional stops, throwing in extra sections, odd-numbered time signatures, and dense webs of guitar arpeggios and harmonized leads. At times, it seems like they're doing it simply because they can; parts of the album lack direction and probably should have been trimmed for momentum's sake. Pacing-wise, the album again loosely follows the blueprint of Ride the Lightning, though not as closely as Master of Puppets. This time around, the fourth song -- once again a ballad with a thrashy chorus and outro -- gave the band one of the unlikeliest Top 40 singles in history; "One" was an instant metal classic, based on Dalton Trumbo's antiwar novel Johnny Got His Gun and climaxing with a pulverizing machine-gun imitation. As a whole, opinions on ...And Justice for All remain somewhat divided: some think it's a slightly flawed masterpiece and the pinnacle of Metallica's progressive years; others see it as bloated and overambitious. Either interpretation can be readily supported, but the band had clearly taken this direction as far as it could. The difficulty of reproducing these songs in concert eventually convinced Metallica that it was time for an overhaul. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

      • Still my favorite band

      • Just want to say that I'm a 34 year old mother of one who has been a huge Metallica fan since I was in junior high! I love all of their music...even Load and ReLoad were a big part of the experience of being a fan. Of course we all have our favorites and our least favs, but I think a true fan can't be a fair weather fan. I remember when they all chopped their hair off and all kinds of "fans" were pissed about it. Well, I have to say, the boys never looked hotter, and I grew up loving all the long hair bands too, but it was time for a makeover in my opinion. My 5 year old son rocks out to Metallica in the back seat of my Tundra on a daily basis. Right now his favorite song is Fuel. To hear his little voice singing along with James is priceless!
I hope Metallica continues to make great music together, and that I continue to love it as well. By the way....And Justice For All is one of my favorite. Dyers Eve had a huge impact on me at a very low point in my life and I will always think of that song when I recall certain times.

      • Best Music Ever

      • There is no doubt in my mind that this is Metallica at its peak, everyone has there downfalls, but come on, if you like Metallica you like ALL of Metallica, not just 4 albums cause then ill call you a poser, but this album over all is one of the best next to Master and Ride, it has so much anger and power to it, it blew my girlfriends mind and now shes in love with James and the whole band, manly James tho, so for me getting my girl away from death metal into true metal, i give this album a great 10/10, truly amazing.

      • Best

      • Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And All Justice for All are the best damn Metallica albums ever. The "Black" album is pretty good, but the rest of em.......... So sad.

      • Very compelling

      • This is a most worthy follow up to Master Of Puppets, it may not be as
good, but Master was just so awesome its hard to make another,
especially when your genius of a bassist (Cliff Burton) dies. Obviously
One and ...And Justice For All are the leaders ofthe pack here, but I
want to say that To Live Is To Die is the greatest instrumental I've
        ever heard....RIP Cliff.

      • i love this album
favorite song to play on guitar is One
this is their best album for thrash elements until Death Magnetic
hell, it's their best album until Death Magnetic
this tops the Black Album by a longshot
        it's heavy
        it's loud
the only bad thing is that James and Lars overpowered Jason Newsted, so it was hard to identify the bass
Load and ReLoad were good, but not true heavy metal
Garage Inc. has some of their early stuff mixed in
        S & M a live album
St. Anger, don't get me started there
and Death Magnetic revives the old Metallica
this album set Metallica to new heights with the video and the solo for One
In contention with their greatest album, along with Master and Death

      • Dyers Eve

      • Dyers Eve is one of Metallica's greatest songs, though not very many people listen to or have even heard it. It is one of Metallica's angriest and in your face songs. Also one of their few songs in the beginning of their career that uses the f-bomb. Very aggresive.

      • 9.5/10

      • "One," the most impressive solo I have ever heard. I love "The Frayed Ends Of Sanity," definitely my favorite song of the album. "Blackened," I would have to say is the hardcore of the bunch. Over all, another astonishing feat from Metallica.
