Confines of Heat is an excellent split release from post-rockers
the Mercury Program and
Maserati. The two bands have a similar sound, making for a near-perfect pairing.
The Mercury Program have a slightly jazzier emphasis and make extensive use of a Fender Rhodes, while
Maserati are more rock oriented. The tunes themselves all have that late-night chillout vibe that post-rockers tend to purvey, except "Wires Were Towers," where
Maserati turns up the energy a notch. None of this is new or revelatory, but it is extremely well-played and highly enjoyable. Fans of
Tortoise should take note of both of these bands. [Also included is a DVD of unreleased videos.] ~ Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide
