One has to wonder whatever became of
Martika. She sort of dropped off the map before the dawn of this new century. With that question in mind, this budget-priced compilation from Sony Special Products in some ways is preferable to the more complete set entitled
Toy Soldiers: The Best of Martika, issued in 2005. This one, while containing fewer tracks, has more of the singer's mature work and isn't as saturated with the postmodern bubblegum of its predecessor. In fact, when taking in at least eight of these ten tunes, one can hear something in this vocalist that never occurred to anyone when she was recording regularly: the possibility of a true song stylist emerging. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
