album review

Like many big-budget albums of the last years of the 2000s, Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel faced shifting release dates, all as the final product was tweaked in light of disappointing reactions to early singles, particularly the Eminem-baiting "Obsessed." Unlike many of those big-budget albums, including several made by Mariah herself, Memoirs isn't the product of a stable of producers and collaborators; it is almost entirely the work of The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, the team best known for their tracks for Rihanna. Certainly, there are echoes of "Umbrella" to be heard on Memoirs, just as there are elements of the gauzy "Touch My Body," The-Dream and Tricky Stewart's previous single for Mariah, although working with mainly one set of producers does give Memoirs a cohesion that can sometimes lapse into sameness, but not in an unpleasant fashion. Even if it doesn't smack of the confessional autobiography of the title, there's no denying that Memoirs is an album, not a collection of tracks, possessing its own flow and mood, which gives it a personality the slightly desperate E=MC2 lacked, even if it never manages to kick out a song that is all that distinctive on its own terms. Nevertheless, what it also lacks is the pandering, heavy-handed sexuality Mariah has relied upon too heavily this decade -- and in doing so, it feels age appropriate in a way she hasn't in a long time, despite a collection of silly, jumbled lyrics. All Memoirs needs to push it over the edge is a great pair of singles, and their absence does hurt the album a bit, but not enough to prevent it from being her most interesting album in a decade. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • Loving Mimi's Memoirs

      • The 1st time I listened to this album, the only song that jumped out at me was Angels Cry... I think that's because I love ballads.  After a couple more times of actual listening (not listening while working or doing something else) I fell in love with the whole collection.  Most people keep saying that the album is very cohesive and I completely agree.  Hateu grew on me and Standing O is not lyrically strong but there's something about it I really really love.  Overall there's something slightly different about this album compared to her others but it's on par with the likes of Butterfly and the Emancipation of Mimi.

      • Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel

      • I have always been a fan of Mariah but have never really bought her CD's untill the Emancipation of Mimi. I really didn't think that Mariah would be able to top E=MC2, and during the first couple listen throughs that was what I was thinking. However I began listening to more and more songs and they all grew on me for different reasons.
        - This is one of the non-ballad songs on the album that really caught my attention. The entire "O,o,O,o,O" section os incredibly catchy.
-This is the first ballad from Mariah that really makes me think very emotionally and her later ballads really haven't brought that recently!
        - I cannot believe that I love the "Reprise" of a song so much! I can blare this song and listen to it about 20 times in a row. I wish Mariah would have actually made this the music to the real song!
        - I love this song because I can picture Mariah swinging in the tire from her older video. It seems like the old Mariah is back!
        - Okay its just funny! great beat!!!!!
Over all I really love this album! My only complaint is that it is a little bogged down with ballads. Don't get me wrong I love a great ballad, but when they out weigh the up tempo songs I get a little iffy! On the good side they are very good here! My score would be a 8.5/10
