This is not an entirely objective review, as I've been a fan of Madonna since her first album, Madonna, was released in 1983.

Hard Candy is an interesting blend of disco/techno/pop with a heaping helping of hip-hop influences, thanks to additions by Timbaland, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell Williams.

While some critics have dismissed this album as an attempt to grab a piece of the urban pie, so to speak, a quick browse through her musical past challenges that assumption. While always rooted in pop and dance, Madonna's sound has incorporated jazz, gospel, classical and even elements from the new Age genre. Is it any surprise that she'd eventually try her hand at hip-hop?
Hard Candy doesn't fully showcase the vocal maturity Madonna's developed over the years and her voice seems to get a bit overpowered at times by ambitious track layering. However, the vocal arrangements are sing-along friendly, especially on tracks like Heartbeat and Miles Away, which are destined to become number one hits.
She's Not Me, Dance 2night, and Beat Goes On are unapologetically disco inspired - what keeps them fresh is the hip-hop flavors Madonna was smart enough to seek out.
Lyrically, 4 Minutes does the best job at answering the critics, and it has a message that is subtly spiritual (be careful what you wish for). She knows full well what people say about her (...the road to hell is paved with good intentions), but she'll do what she wants to do. It's a four minute plea to get you to change your thinking and help save the world. The best peek into her life philosophy has to be Give It 2 Me (You're only here to win/Forget what they say...They'd do it too/If they were you) No argument here.
Overall, Hard Candy is a bold treat you'll want to sample again and again.
