album review

Los Temerarios haven't been without their detractors in the regional Mexican field; critics of the incredibly popular group argue that their urbane, highly polished brand of romantic Mexican pop is excessively slick, predictable, and unchallenging. It's true that Los Temerarios are far from the most challenging group in the regional Mexican field, but then, they never claimed to be Los Tigres del Norte -- and faulting them for not having more bite is sort of like complaining that a romantic comedy isn't a Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino film. In other words, Los Temerarios' sizable group of followers know exactly what to expect -- they know they're getting musical comfort food, which is how Tributo al Amor can easily be described. With this release, Los Temerarios offer yet another dose of the sort of sentimental mood music that has made them superstars in the regional Mexican market. Tributo al Amor isn't Mexican music in the hardcore sense; it's Latin adult contemporary with mariachi and ranchera overtones, and arguably, these grupero performances are a Mexican equivalent of the sleek salsa romantica that one finds in the Afro-Cuban world. Few surprises occur on Tributo al Amor, which doesn't break any new ground for Los Temerarios. But if the album is predictable, it's also predictably enjoyable -- especially if one is in the mood for something warm and fuzzy, which is definitely the type of ambience that Los Temerarios are going for. While Tributo al Amor isn't an essential addition to their catalog, it's a respectable and pleasantly good-natured effort that Los Temerarios' hardcore followers will appreciate. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
