album review

On their first two albums, Led Zeppelin unleashed a relentless barrage of heavy blues and rockabilly riffs, but Led Zeppelin III provided the band with the necessary room to grow musically. While there are still a handful of metallic rockers, III is built on a folky, acoustic foundation that gives the music extra depth. And even the rockers aren't as straightforward as before: the galloping "Immigrant Song" is powered by Robert Plant's banshee wail, "Celebration Day" turns blues-rock inside out with a warped slide guitar riff, and "Out on the Tiles" lumbers along with a tricky, multi-part riff. Nevertheless, the heart of the album lies on the second side, when the band delve deeply into English folk. "Gallows Pole" updates a traditional tune with a menacing flair, and "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" is an infectious acoustic romp, while "That's the Way" and "Tangerine" are shimmering songs with graceful country flourishes. The band hasn't left the blues behind, but the twisted bottleneck blues of "Hats off to (Roy) Harper" actually outstrips the epic "Since I've Been Loving You," which is the only time Zeppelin sound a bit set in their ways. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • Led Zeppelin III

      • A lot had been said about this album.I feel it is some of Led Zeppelins best work. With the Immigrant Song being the biggest hit on the album. it was an acoustic album the first of its kind for the band.It opened up a new style for Led Zeppelin that everyone should grow to appreciate

      • ZEPPELIN III

      • Robert Plant did say  that of all the Zeppelin albums in the Zeppelin catalog this was the worst selling  album, because people were not looking to embrace this acoustic sound, they were looking for Whole Lotta of Love Part 1, 2, 3, .
This album provided the band with the necessary room to grow musically, while there are still a handful of metallic rockers, III is built on a folksy  acoustic foundation that gives the music extra depth.
Maybe some fans now do appreciate this album more now then the day it was released, but  it's still a album best know for it's cover and not it's music .

      • "Underrated"

      • Probably the least popular album in Zeppelin's repertoire, it certainly is the most underrated. Zeppelin III begins with the "Immigrant Song" as if a continuation from the second album, then transforms us into a more subtle and cerebral state of mind. By Jimmy Page's own admittance, there are a few engineering mistakes on the album, most notably the bridge between the songs "Friends" and "Celebration Day" was to contain a short drum sequence, not guitar. With that said however, the album still stands on sturdy merits.

      • The Album was Awesome

      • I wish they were still releasing the original album style. The pinwheel inside the front cover was genius, and entertaining. They just don't make things like they used to.
