album review

Lamb of God's follow-up to 2006's exceptionally brutal Sacrament returns the Virginia-based heavy metal outfit to the political soapbox that framed 2004's Ashes of the Wake. While Sacrament positioned itself firmly in the metalcore section of fan playlists, 2009's Wrath wraps itself in a relentless firestorm of Bay Area thrash. Despite a promising, heavily melodic instrumental intro ("The Passing") that fuses Black Album-era Metallica with the sonic artistry of Agalloch, Wrath ultimately descends into a black abyss of atonal riffing, machine-gun drumming, and forgettable lyrics peppered with clichéd metal outrage that stirs up a mighty storm, but no carnage. Wrath's production is as aggressive as ever (thanks to longtime LOG colleague Josh Wilbur), but so is nearly every major label alt/death/black/grindcore release in the 21st century -- all it takes is a few good choruses to separate a band from the herd, something that Lamb of God have done in the past, but not so this time around. The band does occasionally step outside of its comfort zone ("Grace" lives up to its name with some truly inspired early and midsong guitar work, while "Reclamation" mines epic, Sabotage-era Black Sabbath), and there's no denying the sheer "angry basement workout/summer garage weightlifting" potential that Wrath's perfectly acceptable 45-minute running time offers, but without a single hook that sticks around long enough to reel in the fish, all you've got is bait. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide

      • Amazing.

      • You just can't please some of these reviewers. Just listen to it, because online reviews are a fallacy, no matter how wordy, opinionated, and seemingly intelligent the review is. Wrath is an impressive album that I've been playing the sh*t out of. I don't think this or any other LoG albums deserve an iota of hate. It's incredible that material this well-written and great-sounding has come out of the modern metal scene, with all the garbage out there. It's a damn good album, and hearing Lamb of God live a few nights ago with their powerful set list full of songs from EVERY album, I have to say, they haven't missed yet. Wrath is more than worth the buy, even with the special editions. "Forgettable lyrics"? That's bullsh*t. That Monger guy should give up writing about metal.

      • Good, but not the best.

      • A solid, powerful album from one of the leaders of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. It is not a riff-driven as Ashes of the Wake, but much better than the over-pruduced crap that was Sacrament. No more over-done overdubbing of Randy's voice. This album definatly has a more raw, pure sound than anything I have heard recently.

      • So Far, So Good

      • I became a fan when I saw LOG open for Superjoint Ritual.  They play and sound better with every release.  Wrath is their best album to date.

      • Wrath...

      • Wrath is not LoG's best stuff but still good non the less, and I'm a little worried they might pull a Metallica by starting out great then turning to crap. Hopefully they put some more time into their next album and stop that from happening. However one praise about this album, is LoG is still real metal, not the teeny bop metal crap thats been plagueing us lately.

      • It is Pure American Metal

      • This is my favorite album now.  They have are conguring the metal world.  There so harmonious that it is epic.  From my personal view my favorite song on Wrath is Grace.  The solo, if you have listened to it, about half way through the solo is the mini sweep is just perfect and was needed.  i am gld that they are able to perfect these songs in only the way that Lam of God can.

      • Return of Brutality

      • Wrath sounds like a cross between the virtuosity of Sacrament and the brutality of As The Palaces Burn. The drums really stand out on songs like In Your Words, Set To Fail and Fake Messiah, with Chris Adler's distinct snare sound more audible in the mix than any album since New American Gospel. Randy's vocals have taken another turn for the better, with an improved range and even more viciousness in his traditional growl. The guitars of Willie and Mark are even more technically proficient, and they seem to have a little more edge, a little more thrashiness than Sacrament's mix presented. And of course, John's bass stands out on this record... the rhythm section in general feels like it got a lot more attention in the mix. This is quickly becoming my second favorite LoG record, closely behind ATPB and ahead of Ashes of the Wake.
