album review

Lacuna Coil's second full-length album successfully combines the backbone of metal with the ethereal trappings of goth. While vocalist Cristina Scabbia gives the band their sonic calling card, additional vocals from the group's male singer, Andrea Ferro, add tonal variety and balance. Rarely succumbing to heavy-handedness, Lacuna Coil escapes the stylistic straitjacket of the goth/metal formula, making them more accessible than many of their peers. The special-edition release includes the band's Halflife EP as an added bonus. ~ Andy Hinds, All Music Guide

      • Lacuna Coil at their best!

      • To be honest, I was introduced to Lacuna Coil only through the album Karmacode. Since then, I've purchased all of their albums and this one stands out far above the others. That's not to say that Comalies and In a Reverie aren't good, but this one has such an ethereal production (and the bonus Halflife EP doesn't hurt, in fact, that makes this album even better.) that I have fallen in love with this album. Also, Andrea Ferro's vocals on "To Live Is to Hide" are probably the best they've ever been. Rather than grating the ears as they usually do, they compliment and provide a perfect counterpoint for Cristina Scabbia's lovely voice. I'm not going to do a track-by-track review, but know that this album is definitely worth the purchase on cd or download (I suggest buying the disc, otherwise you won't get the awesome Halflife EP included.)
